The Havanese is a small, sturdy dog of immense charm. The native dog of Cuba, he is beloved as a friendly, intelligent and playful companion. He is slightly longer than tall, with a long, untrimmed, double coat. The Havanese has a short upper arm with moderate shoulder layback and a straight topline that rises slightly from the withers to the croup. The plumed tail is carried arched forward up over the back. The unique springy gait is a result of the breed's structure and playful, spirited personality. These characteristics of temperament, coat, structure and gait are essential to type.

I had a fabulous time seeing lots of old friends and made a few new ones on a recent outing to a dog show. I saw many top quality Toy dogs of such quality that it made me know there is way more to those in Group 5 than beauty when they stand posed. It seems like more and more judges are not only looking for type, something that is critical for each breed, but they seem to care more about movement and structure. Those dogs in the Toy group in Tam- pa, Florida—almost without fail—made me know our beloved Toys are in good hands and progressing in the right direction. The quality was deep and I saw it again in the Orlando shows when there were some additions to the line up. Looking at winners across the country again makes me aware that breeders, handlers, owners and judges get it with the respective breeds. As a
former judge of many Toy dogs, I can say they have come a long way in the generations past. Great job to all of you competing! Aside from the quality of dogs, it seems there are so many unhappy peo- ple at shows—usually when they don’t win. They trash talk online and fail to really evaluate the situation or attempt to learn what really happened. There are times you win when you should not (really!) and lose when you should not. Judges make the best possible deci- sion on that day based on what they know and what the years have taught them. Education today is more avail- able than ever before and the majority take advantage of it. Each day at a dog show should be a learning experience which can only happen if you stay at the show, listen and learn. Friendships developed over the years will sustain you when the going gets
tough, treasure those people. None of us enter to lose and everyone enters to win. Be a true friend, c ongratulate those who win and when it is your turn, win in a gracious manner. On a personal note, the Orlando nightclub shooting left me horrified at the shocking and senseless tragedy and makes me concerned about more attacks. Everyone—gay, straight, bisex- ual, transgendered—must join togeth- er, because these tragedies are happen- ing all too often. I direct you to read our editor-in-chief’s tribute on page 17. many breeds, puppies and young stock of different bloodlines—and some- times of the same breeding—develop at different rates. Some will shoot up to their full height, then stop growing and take quite a long time to fully develop. Others develop more steadily, even in height and body weight during their growing period. The bigger the breed, the longer it takes for full maturity to be attained. Owners of these breeds understand that they have to wait a few years before their paragons are ready to take on all corners. On the other hand, maturity often comes much sooner for some smaller breeds. Past history for many breeds seems to indicate that dogs that take their time to mature will quite often, in the end, outlast the flashy and glamorous youngsters. There appears to be great- er understanding why some judges
consider it important to know the age of a dog to be able to really evaluate its true merit. In this sport, it depends entirely on opinion. I have learned that even though we accept the fact that every- one is entitled to express an opinion as being correct and beyond dispute. It is for this very reason that it is important to grant some degree of respect to those who take the judging of dogs seriously enough to want to know the age of a dog. The idiosyncrasies that are present in the growth and maturity of all live- stock are sufficient reason to ask, “Is age important when judging?” As with most opinions, there is a cop out to answer that question. “Judge them on the day,” which I interpret to mean as knowing sufficient information about a breed to know just what it should look like on that particular day.

pies of many breeds entered in the Open class. Invariably, these are pup- pies that are either over grown, over developed or too mature for their age to compete with puppies—or so their handlers or owners assume. Whether this practice is done with the inten- tion of fooling the judge does not mat- ter; for the very simple reason that, just like any other means of changing the appearance of a dog artificially, it is the breeder and exhibitor who are fooling themselves. In general, I feel that age is a mat- ter that weighs very heavily with the knowledgeable and experienced judge. With them it is an accepted fact that, in

friends. The following article was written by a friend. It may help to avoid a tragic accident involving your dog. Everyday products and foods can cause serious problems to a Toy dog. A few household products that are toxic to dogs are: antifreeze, bleach, deodorants, detergent, cray- ons, furniture polish, liquor, matches, mothballs, nail polish remover, pencils, pHisohex ® , photographic sup- plies, shoe polish, suntan lotion and oil, acetaminophen and wax. Anything that is labeled “Keep out of reach of children” should also be kept away from dogs. Chocolate should never be given to a dog. Choco- late contains xanthines, which are highly toxic to small dogs. A small amount of chocolate can put a Pom in a life threatening position. There is no antidote. Antifreeze is an irresistible taste treat for dogs. How- ever, it can be a deadly treat. If you are lucky, you will notice the first signs of antifreeze poisoning when your dog starts acting slightly drunk. If you suspect that your dog has ingested antifreeze, try to induce vomit- ing and go to the vet immediately as the antifreeze must be flushed through the system very quickly to prevent kidney failure. There is an antifreeze on the market that claims it is not toxic to dogs. Another deadly taste treat for dogs is snail bait (met- aldehyde). Within a few hours of eating this, muscle tremors will begin leading to high body temperature. Drooling and vomiting may occur. If you catch this early, pumping the stomach will help. In addition, activated charcoal will help absorb some of the toxins. It is also recommended that the dog be sedated until the poison is out of the system. There is not an antidote for this type of poison. Early treatment is the only possibility of survival. Snakebites have got to be every owner’s worst night- mare. All snakebites must be seen by a vet; poisonous bites cause rapid swelling in the bite area. There may be bleeding and a discharge from the wound. The swelling will rapidly go up the leg or muzzle and the wound may turn purple. Pick the dog up and do not let him move on his own as this will cause the venom to travel faster. Be aware that this injury is painful and your dog might bite you. Try to keep the dog as calm and quiet as possible on the way to the vet. The dog must be treated with antivenin as soon as possible if he is to be saved. There is no home remedy for a poisonous snakebite. Whenever you suspect your dog has eaten a poten- tially toxic substance, the best advice is to see your vet immediately. Dog-proofing your house and yard is pos- sible. In our house the one totally off limits area is the garage. We have moved toxic plantings to areas of the yard where there are no dogs and we don’t use snail bait in the dogs’ yard area.

on behind the scenes. These same people said barriers to attending were that it was time consuming, exclusive, expensive, appeared to be political and the shows were hard to find out about. They thought the beauty pageant aspect was boring, overly formal and they couldn’t understand the judging or pro- cedures. And they had questions about the logistics of attending, such as what to wear or could they bring their own dog. Again, what can we do to make this better? 1) Free, or very inexpensive, spectator admission 2) Focus on local publicity as a major club activity, not an afterthought 3) Provide a contact number for questions, and man it with your most personable members 4) Provide a judging schedule before- hand, online, at veterinary clinics, feed stores and wherever else you posted announcements 5) Post online and provide handouts at the show explaining what happens in judging 6) Have club members circulating with “ASK ME!” type badges or t-shirts 7) Dog show tours are great! But also take them behind the scenes, chat to people grooming. 8) Provide chairs or rest areas so they don’t have to leave once their feet are tired. Optimally, have a club
ago. Reasons included costs, issues with judges (breed knowledge, politics, favoritism), time constraints and dif- ficulty getting majors. If we want dog shows to survive, we need to keep cur- rent exhibitors and attract new exhibi- tors. Focusing on the former, the thing individuals have the most control over is judging. The answer is simple: just judge the dogs. That’s how judges can save our sport. And exhibitors: don’t expect favors. Don’t cheat. That’s how you can save the your sport. How do we attract new people? I’m a huge advocate of keeping shows in their local communities rather than clustering them all in a few sites within a state. How many people wandered into a show and left being impressed by a particular breed or even left with a desire to be part of it? I did. But appar- ently 6-year-olds from a hundred years (or so) ago are more easily impressed than today’s adults, at least according to a study done by an AKC focus group with the goal of understanding the pub- lic’s perception of AKC and AKC shows. The groups consisted of owners of AKC registered dogs who already had a favorable impression of the AKC. One group was open to attending a dog show, the other to actually participat- ing in one. Their primary exposure to dog shows was the Westminster Kennel Club show on television. Among those open to attending shows, they were interested in agility, seeing the different breeds, having a family outing, socializing with like- minded people and seeing what went
10)Exhibitors: Let people pet your dogs. Be ready to help when some- body looks confused. Stop talking to each other long enough to wel- come spectator’s questions! Among those open to participating in a dog show, the major draw was agil- ity, which they saw as fun. They liked the idea of being with like-minded peo- ple and of competing, and also saw it as a way to teach kids responsibility. They saw agility as more fun, faster paced, easier to learn and more natural, as compared to conformation. Their barriers to participating in conformation were having ineligible dogs (spayed, neutered or with breed DQs), difficulty getting a good show dog, time and expense and lack of “Beginner Shows” where they could learn in a less stressful environment. So besides all of the above, we need to provide fun matches, training class- es and help finding a show dog. More agility classes could be a way to lure prospective competitors in, especially those with dogs ineligible for confor- mation. And don’t forget beginner level events like Canine Good Citizen, Cours- ing Ability Tests (and actually the new Fast CAT seems easier for a club to put

on, and just as much fun) and the new introductory agility competition. Have a Therapy Dog group. Show them we do more than dress up and trot in a circle. Many had seen the AT&T documen- tary video of the AKC National Dog Show (if you missed it, watch it on U-Verse.com). I thought this was one of the better dog show documentaries I’ve seen, especially because it high- lighted owner-handlers (who clearly loved their dogs) at the top levels of competition. But the focus group results seemed to disagree, commenting that the emphasis on conformation wasn’t as engaging as agility; that participants seemed snobby and un-relatable, judg- ing seemed subjective and many were unsure as to what was happening. On the plus side, the video increased inter- est in attending, with comments that it seemed varied and fun, kids might enjoy it, dogs seemed happy, handlers and owners really love their dogs and handlers really cared about each other. But it actually decreased interest in participating, as viewers commented it would require huge investment in money, time and passion and that they couldn’t relate to people in shows. They didn’t like that spayed and neutered dogs couldn’t be shown, or the fact that the video focused on the “beauty pag- eant” and grooming.
Fido TV to run one with people who didn’t seem out of the Best in Show movie it would be better. And yes, fol- lowing agility competitors would be a much better program than following conformation competitors. One thing is clear: spectators love agility. I agree. I go to a lot of dog shows and a lot of agility trials. At shows I try to chose one breed and study it, along with its standard, but unless I’m actively watching like this, conformation judg- ing is about as exciting as well, watch- ing earthdog trials. But I can sit next to the agility ring and watch with only partial attention and still find it interest- ing. Every dog, every run, is different. It’s easy to follow what’s going on, and whether the dog qualified—except not so much if you look at the handlers, who look just as pleased with their dog either way. Can you add a My Dog Can Do That! area to your show with some agility equipment and an instructor? Even if you have to pay somebody, it may be money well worth it. Can you have a monthly or even weekly agility fun day? Is there a park where you can set up equipment, put on demos and let people have a try? Can we get more agil- ity on television? AKC is doing, or at least making plans to do, more diverse things to attract people.
In addition to those listed above, I would add to that that spectators get a very biased view of dog shows when they just see Westminster, the National Dog Show and the AKC National—and when they focus on the potential group winners at these events. I’d quit before I started if I thought that would be my competition. With so much going at the AKC National, it would be better to focus on dogs in agility, obedience and dock diving as well as conformation, and maybe highlight some multi-sport dogs. What about the NOHS Invitation- al? And we need to let people know that these shows are not the norm; we have small local shows throughout the coun- try where you don’t wear sequins and your dog gets to swim in a pond after— or before—he shows. We need more spokespeople. Trained ones. I often cringe when I see interviews at the dog show, as crazy dog lady explains some esoteric fairy tale point about her breed nobody cares about. Perhaps AKC could offer an online class in being a local purebred dog spokesman and advocate. Remember the reality TV show Dog Show Moms and Dads? It could have been good for our sport, but it wasn’t. Perhaps if we could convince

canine ambassador proGram The Canine Ambassador Program consists of nearly 400 volunteers from local AKC dog clubs who make pre- sentations about dogs to children at schools, after-school programs, scout meetings and other kid-friendly venues. The AKC site has an online directory of ambassadors, an introductory letter to schools, a dog bite presentation and other resources. Does your club have a Canine Ambassador?

We’ve held ours in the local mall, local flea market (a $15 table is a deal!) and in conjunction with local pet charity events like the Doxie Derby. We’ve found PetSmart ® won’t let us go there, but Tractor Supply ® would welcome us, especially on one of their pet days. If you have room, add some agility obstacles and let people try with their own dogs.

We’ll see come their launch date, which hasn’t been announced yet. psas The AKC’s Public Relations and Communications team is planning to create new and updated PSAs for digital and television sources. bark For liFe The American Kennel Club part- nered with the American Cancer Soci- ety’s Bark for Life campaign in March of 2016. Bark for Life is an event hon- oring the life-long contributions of our Canine Caregivers. The AKC will use the funds to edu- cate the public on dog health, micro- chipping, socialization and the link between canine and human health. Last month, Bark for Life Westchester raised $31,000. inFormación en español And the AKC has created a section on its website where brochures will be available in Spanish, reaching another large segment of our population. make it Happen It sounds doable. And it could be, if people would devote 1% of the energy they devote showing dogs to promoting them. “But I’m way too busy,” says the handler whose livelihood depends on dog shows being around the next few decades. He won’t be so busy awaiting his welfare check when they go away. “Too busy with this litter,” says the breeder who needs puppy buyers. She’ll be really busy keeping that litter of ten for the next ten years. Then she’ll be all alone because she won’t dare breed another. “I’m tired of nobody helping,” says the club member who keeps say- ing yes. One day she’ll get smart and won’t go back to a meeting. The others do the same. The club folds. The han- dler wonders why those lazy club mem- bers quit putting on a show for him to earn money at. The breeder wonders why they no longer promote her dogs for her. The club member wonders why nobody stepped up to save it all if it meant so much.

book donation In the last few months the AKC has donated more than 350 books nation- wide to schools and libraries. Titles include: The Complete Dog Book, Dogs: The First 125 Years of the Ameri- can Kennel Club, The Complete Dog Book for Kids, Our Dogs: A Century of Images and Words from the AKC Gazette and The New Yorker Book of Dog Cartoons . What about your local kennel club? Several years ago our small club had a book drive from amongst our members, and we were able to donate almost 70 books to our local library. Not only are the books there to educate our community members, but each book has a book plate with our kennel club’s name. But note, before donating books make sure they are in good shape, and that the library will put them on their shelves rather than sell them. And really, they should be donating my Barron’s Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds ! meet tHe breeds The AKC Meet the Breeds events at the AKC National Championship in December and the Westminster Ken- nel Club Dog Show in February are the two largest such events in the country, introducing thousands of spectators to the AKC breeds in a relaxed and interac- tive way. Many local dog clubs do their

M r. Douglas A. Johnson, of Bloomington, Indiana, received his first Clum- ber Spaniel as a birth- day present from his parents before he could drive. This gift lead to a lifetime dedication to the sport of purebred dogs. Breeding under the world-famous Clussexx banner, he has produced over 150 champion Clumber, Sussex Span- iels, Welsh Springer Spaniels, Pekingese and English Toy Spaniels. He has a pas- sion for breeding dogs and continues to run a top breeding program today. His dogs have won more than 130 Best in Show awards and 12 National Specialty wins across three breeds. He has bred all-breed Best in Show winners in four different breeds. Mr. Johnson is on the Judges Task force for the American Kennel Club. He has the distinct honor of pro- ducing two Westminster Best in Show winners; in 1996, the Clumber Spaniel Ch. Clussexx Country Sunrise, “Brady”, was crowned Best in Show, and again in 2009 with the Sussex Spaniel, “Stump”, Ch. Clussexx Three D Grin- chy Glee. To date, Stump is the oldest dog to ever win the coveted Westmin- ster Best in Show award. Mr. Johnson is the only breeder to have bred West- minster Best in Show winners in two different breeds. Mr. Johnson was awarded the American Kennel Club’s Sporting Breeder of the Year award in 2005. He is a member of the Santa Barbara Ken- nel Club, American Spaniel Club, the Bloomington Indiana Kennel Club, the Hoosier Kennel Club, the Derby- town Pekingese Club and is a lifetime member of the Clumber Spaniel Club of America. What made you decide to devote your life to dogs? Wow—that is a loaded question. I think I was in the right place at the

senior dog—over 10 years old. Win- ning a second Best in show at WKC was never something I had dreamt of. This is a thrill that will last a lifetime. The stars aligned that night and he was up for the challenge. It was so fun and so exciting and really one of the best dog stories of triumph over illness and testament to devotion and medical advancement in dogs. This win was a win that could be celebrated from every angle. from What loss did you learn the most? The loss of a litter from a poorly performed c-section. I learned I had to have better medical care for my dogs, to seek out and find a vet who would be as interested in my success as I was at wanting to be successful. Breeders have to have skilled veterinary services. We rely on them to keep our family of dogs happy and healthy. If you are not work- ing with a vet who is able to celebrate your success, then you need to find another one. It is a partnership for sure. What one person has influenced you the most either in or out of the dog World? I could never say one. I have several that have influencedme for different rea- sons. Everett Dean certainly influenced me as a judge; his way and style have played a part in how I hope to portray myself. Sandy Blakeley, as a breed men- tor, gave me great dogs and the knowl- edge of how to breed them. Bryan and Nancy Martin influenced me on condi- tion and showing and Margaret Cur- tis guided me and allowed our kennel to be successful. for the remaining ques- tions let’s focus on the toy group: do you have a favorite toy breed? It would have to be English Toys, but I am open to them all! Let’s just say I don’t have a least favorite! do you have an exciting english toy litter planned, or a special dog Waiting in the Wings? I think all of the litters are excit- ing. We are planning to use a lovely dog from Russia this year and that is certainly exciting. I have done lots of

right time. I was young and impression- able, seeking acceptance and enjoyed the company of dogs. My first Clumber was my best friend in high school. The dog community was good to me from the beginning; I started with strong role models and mentors and had ear- ly success as a breeder. These things combined to create a path that lead to where I am today. What made you decide to branch out from your famed clussexx program to incorporate toys into the fold? I love dogs and I am always interest- ed in different breeds. I saw an English Toy at a show and was taken by him. I hope to continue to breed for many years and I wanted a smaller breed that I could pick up as I age. I love the Clum- bers, but I won’t be able to breed them at 80! I plan to be around doing this for a long while, so this breed afforded me some similar traits in a smaller package. Adding Toy breeds to my kennel has made me keep interested in the dog show competition and keep challenging my brain, learning about other breeds and traits, reproduction differences and different socialization processes. It has been beneficial to me on many levels. The English Toys are an obvious choice for us with the mass and bone and emphasis on head. We love Spaniels so this is right up our alley. The Chins were introduced to me while working with Bryan and Nancy Martin. There is not a bigger fan of that breed than Nancy. I have loved them since that time and the
Pekingese are the best companions to have around. Those three breeds make for a full house. I would love to breed a litter of Pekes someday but that breed has wonderful breeders, the English Toy breed needed us more and we felt we could really contribute to their qual- ity by breeding them, and I think we certainly have. I am proud of the work we have done with that breed in such a short time. My experience as a master breeder and preservation breeder of various Sporting Dog breeds is an advantage as a breeder of Toy Spaniels. What Was your first big Win handling one of your oWn dogs? My first big win with my handling was long ago winning Winners Dog at the National under a very famous and successful English Breeder, Ray Furness. The dog was “Wilbur”, Ch. Smokerise Country Gentleman, and he would go on to be a very influential sire in our breed. He was the sire of “Brady”, the first WKC BIS winner I bred. But I have had many gratifying wins, my first all-breed BIS was under Ron Pemberton, and that was a thrill for me since he was fond of Clum- bers and many years prior showed the breed. I also won our National Specialty under the famous Spaniel man Norman Austin in the early part of my career. What is your most mem- orable Win as either a handler or an oWner? Without question this would have to be Stump’s win at the Garden as a
