Top Notch Toys -July 2016

my cats had knocked off the counter onto the floor. As soon as I said, “Off”, his leave-it command, he dropped the steak and sat look- ing at me, waiting to see what I wanted him to do. I’ve never met a dog so willing to give up a high value item so easily; most would quickly scarf the steak down! Havanese are also very good tempered dogs. Romeo is such a happy boy and he is always smiling! It’s hard to feel anything but joy when you look at his happy face. Because of his size and gentle nature, I am able to bring him out and about with us on dog-friendly adventures. He’s been shoe and dress shop- ping, to make-up stores, parks, computer stores, garden centers and to visit my younger daughters at school. One day I brought him with to pick up one of my daughters from an after school activity, and there were about twelve 11-13 year olds surrounding him and petting him, and Romeo couldn’t have been happier. He was sad when his new friends had to leave and he tried to follow them back into the school. Romeo absolutely loves chil- dren, and because of his sound disposition I never have to worry about him meeting new people--adults and children alike. He is a tod- dler magnet, little ones seem to love him and he is happy to greet them with a wagging tail and a gentle lick. He is also very gentle with my special needs daughter and jumps up on the leg of her wheelchair when she gets home from school until I lift him up to say hello. He licks her and wags his tail and doesn’t care one bit that she can’t move her hands to pet him. I also think that Havanese are intuitive dogs. They seem to know what each member of their family needs and are able to adjust accordingly. Romeo will run around the house like crazy with my 5-year-old and my husband, lay in bed with my 10-year-old as she reads, play a game of fetch with me or be very gentle and calm with my oldest daugh- ter. Of my two cats, he mostly ignores the one that doesn’t want to be bothered and will wrestle around on the floor with our other cat that is his friend. He loves his people and wants to be near us all the time, but doesn’t need to be on top of us and isn’t demanding or needy. He sleeps in bed with me at night, and most mornings he doesn’t want to get out of bed. He will roll over on his back for a belly rub and look at you as if to say, ‘Five more minutes, please?’ In my experience, Havanese are very much a dog lover’s dog. They love to play and are silly goofballs with a thing for shredding paper. They are excellent family companions and their happy go lucky disposition makes falling in love with them easy.
