CLUSSEXX IN REVIEW: An IntervIew wIth DouglAs A. johnson

M r. Douglas A. Johnson, of Bloomington, Indiana, received his first Clum- ber Spaniel as a birth- day present from his parents before he could drive. This gift lead to a lifetime dedication to the sport of purebred dogs. Breeding under the world-famous Clussexx banner, he has produced over 150 champion Clumber, Sussex Span- iels, Welsh Springer Spaniels, Pekingese and English Toy Spaniels. He has a pas- sion for breeding dogs and continues to run a top breeding program today. His dogs have won more than 130 Best in Show awards and 12 National Specialty wins across three breeds. He has bred all-breed Best in Show winners in four different breeds. Mr. Johnson is on the Judges Task force for the American Kennel Club. He has the distinct honor of pro- ducing two Westminster Best in Show winners; in 1996, the Clumber Spaniel Ch. Clussexx Country Sunrise, “Brady”, was crowned Best in Show, and again in 2009 with the Sussex Spaniel, “Stump”, Ch. Clussexx Three D Grin- chy Glee. To date, Stump is the oldest dog to ever win the coveted Westmin- ster Best in Show award. Mr. Johnson is the only breeder to have bred West- minster Best in Show winners in two different breeds. Mr. Johnson was awarded the American Kennel Club’s Sporting Breeder of the Year award in 2005. He is a member of the Santa Barbara Ken- nel Club, American Spaniel Club, the Bloomington Indiana Kennel Club, the Hoosier Kennel Club, the Derby- town Pekingese Club and is a lifetime member of the Clumber Spaniel Club of America.
