B orn in Cedar Vale, Kansas, Duane was one of four sons born to Roy and Elpha Clark Doll: Carroll, Vernon, Loren, all of whom had great love for their baby brother. Duane was a lifelong animal lover enjoying great success as a hobby breeder/exhibitor with his Caney Valley Shorthorns and also as a breeder of purebred dogs. His ElphaSun Pekingese were ranked #1 in the nation several years in a row for Championship Points won, and the lengthy list of homebred champions included Specialty, Toy Group and Best in Show winners. But that came later; Duane had lived an exciting life before he ever bred his first pup. Duane was graduated from Cedar Vale (KS) High School in 1956 and went on to attain a degree in Accounting and Business Administration. After several jobs working for others (including as accountant for a stock-car racetrack!), Duane launched his own men’s clothing store, Man’s Land, in Independence, Kansas, a city he was to call home for many years. During his time there he was active in the Elks and was also elected Generalissimo of the city’s annual Neewol- lah (Halloween) celebration, the largest and most important civic event of the calendar year. Duane was very politically active and served as Chair for numerous campaigns; a high- light was hosting Senator Barry Goldwater during his presi- dential bid. His entire life Duane was fascinated by politics at all levels, kept up with Heads of State and Heads of Dog Clubs, too. He also owned a nightclub in Wichita during resi- dence there, while pursuing his career in the retail clothing business. Duane spent fifteen years as Sales Manager for retail clothing giant A.J. August based in St. Joe, Missouri, and dur- ing that time relocated to Kansas City. Duane also lived up to the nickname he was given in high school, “Party Doll,” after the popular top ten hit on the radio at the time. With a pen- chant for snazzy suits and shiny convertibles, and the ability to dance the Jitterbug with the best, Duane was, indeed, the life of any party. Mourners at his funeral had to smile when we played that song in his honor.

Duane started his adventure in this sport the same as many of us, with a visit to a local show and an instant love for the competitive world of purebred dogs. He jumped right in, buying an English import female from Edward B. Jenner of Knolland Pekingese and an American-bred male (albeit pure English Copplestone breeding) from Troy Caswell. He had further success with dogs from Lorraine Cole, Marjorie Lewis, Bill Norris and Barbara Hagen but his breeding and exhibiting didn’t really catch fire till he formed one of the strongest and longest friendships and partnerships of his life, with the legendary Ruby Dudley of Dud-Lee’s Pekingese, the lady topping the charts in a breed in which it was extremely difficult to do. In a time when the Pekingese breed was owned by the most powerful and influential, not to mention socially-con- nected people in the country, Ruby rose to prominence with a breeding program taking place on a small Iowa farm. Litter after litter produced gorgeous-headed, hugely-coated sturdy correct Pekes which quickly became lionized by judges and spectators alike. As she rose through the ranks jealous people cast aspersions and circulated rumors about this woman who despite her critics continued to produce the best Pekingese in the United States. She was blackballed from member- ship in Clubs but no one could argue with the results. Ruby continued in her quest to produce better and better Pekes with zero regard for the opinions of these people; she knew they’d come around once they saw her Pekes. And they did, in droves.

Ruby was notoriously tough when it came to selling her best dogs; she showed them herself and racked up incredible records with little money, and she really didn’t care if they never left home. Duane Doll, wildly in love with the “Dud-Lee’s look,” worked on her for months and months to get his first Dud-Lee’s dog. Finally, reluctantly, she let him take one home. Three months later they came head-to-head in the show ring and from the classes Duane beat Ruby’s special with a puppy she herself had bred. Ruby was not amused. She acted stone-cold to him, and when it came time for the Toy Group she dragged her lawn chair right up to the ring entrance, and watched the judging with her arms crossed and a belligerent frown on her face. When Duane’s puppy won the Group, Ruby popped up and with a huge smile was the first to congratulate him. “If you’re going to beat me, you’d better beat everybody else, too,” she said. “And you did. Good for you!” The friendship was cemented that day and con- tinued until the day Ruby died. Duane based his successful bloodline on Ruby’s stock and credited her for all the attributes for which his dogs were prized: Enormous correct heads with huge nostrils and gloriously clear eyes, rock-solid bodies and excellent, happy- go-lucky temperaments, all topped off with thick flow- ing coats in vibrant colors. (Ruby was one of the last to produce the prized Chun red which was soon to all but disappear forever from the palate of Peking- ese hues.) Duane artfully introduced outside lines through the years but always managed to retain the traits which he demanded and applauded.

Duane had good experience in other breeds as well, starting with a #1 Shih Tzu and including a #1 Pom, sev- eral champion Goldens, two Borzoi, one Afghan, several Bassets, Bichons and a Group- winning Miniature Poodle. Duane bred champions in three different Variety Groups, but his first love and dedication was to the Pekingese. Duane lent his business acumen to dog clubs as well, holding offices in national and local breed clubs and all-breed clubs. He was a founding member of the Citrus Capital Pekingese Club, a member of many other breed clubs and a Life Member of the Pekingese Club of Texas and the Pekingese Club of America. Duane also served as Show Chair for many successful events. He was also a tireless fundraiser for dog-related chari- ties and was honored by both Take The Lead and The American Kennel Club for his efforts. Despite many years as a successful breeder/exhibitor and supporter of the sport, though, Duane is probably most widely recognized in Toy circles as publisher of the Group’s longest-running publication, the one you read now: Top Notch Toys .

Having started off with a Peke magazine in November of 1983, then one devoted to Poms, then Min Pins, Duane and partner Joe McGinnis made the leap into multi-breed publications with “The Magazine of the Toy Group”— Top Notch Toys —in 1986. It got off to a rocky start. Excitedly announcing his newest project to friends and acquaintances at a Tampa all-breed show, Duane ran into a formida- ble obstacle. A woman who at the time had a lot of clout in the Group turned on him and proceeded to dress him down in very nasty terms. She informed him that he’d never be able to make a Toy magazine fly, that he and his partner were nobodies, and that in particular without HER blessing his new Toy book was “dead in the water.” Well, she didn’t know it, but she’d met her match. Duane fired back, for she’d not only insulted him, and his best friend, she’d also insulted his fledgling TNT . Within a month the first issue was on the street, was met with acclaim, and the magazine quickly became the most suc- cessful Toy publication in history. Long after her name was forgotten, Duane was being applauded for his good work. Duane Doll, then, got the last laugh. This coming March TNT will celebrate its 31st birthday. In keeping with his “Party” theme, Duane co-founded The Orient Express Black Mask Party in honor of the Pekingese Club of America’s Rotating National Specialty, a kick-off party held each year prior to the start of the PCA’s annual show weekend. Guests are requested to wear Black Masks to mirror the black masks on the faces of the dogs they love. The first was held in 1991; the last was held this year in Reno. He also co-founded the “White Excitement Party” with partner Joe and with Carol Frances Andersen of Sand Island fame, which is now a staple on the annual calendar of the American Maltese Associa- tion’s National Specialty. TNT also hosted a “Shrimp & Champagne Party” at various Toy and all-breed events around the country in thanks for the support the magazine received. After launching their all-breed magazine, ShowSight , Joe and Duane debuted the “RedEye Reception” each year the Saturday before Westminster. As with all its other events, this party entertained no speeches nor agenda; it start- ed at 11pm and was a chance for everyone to let their hair down and celebrate with fellow fanciers they don’t often get to see. Following 9/11 this was changed to the Have-A-Heart Ball, a fundraiser benefit- ting Take The Lead and AKC’s Search & Rescue programs. Duane’s philanthropic efforts are well known, as was his caring and generous nature with the people whose lives he touched. The loyalty of his employees and all others he’s dealt with in business or personal situations only pays tribute to his ethics and honesty in all things, at all times. He taught us much and we all owe him a great deal.

Success in many different worlds was not as important to him as the work he did in purebred dogs. Duane’s crowning professional achievement in his own estimation was co-founding Doll-McGinnis Publications in 1983, and his pride in the dog magazines the com- pany produces knew no bounds. Duane served as publisher for the company’s five dog-show magazines for all the intervening years. At the age of 77 Duane still continued to operate as CEO/CFO of the company, a job he relished and performed to perfection. His shoes will be extremely difficult to fill. Among his many charitable acts, two come quickly to mind. In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, Duane and partner Joe launched the Hurri-Canine Rescue Effort which transported over 500 dis- placed pets from Miami’s obliterated areas, fed and medicated them and with the help of many other volunteers nursed them back to physical and mental health until they could be reunited with their families or placed into new, permanent homes. All this was accom- plished on the property the men owned in Lakeland, Florida; the effort took twelve full months to complete. Another was the famous annual Have-A-Heart Ball. Originally the Red Eye Reception because it started at 11:00 pm the Saturday before Westminster, in New York, following 9/11, Duane and Joe transformed renamed and revamped their party into a fundraiser for Take The Lead, the organization which helps dog fanciers in financial distress due to catastrophic illness, and for DOGNY, the American Kennel Club’s organization which benefits Search & Rescue Dogs. The first three Have-A-Heart functions were held at the Plaza Hotel in New York, which waived its 25-pound pet limit so dogs and handlers who actually performed rescue/recovery operations at the World Trade Center following 9/11 could stay overnight in the world’s most famous hotel and be honored at the Ball. Over six years the effort raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the two charities. Another dear friend, Dorothy Nickles, acted as our official Hostess. The Ball was discontinued the year, at 99, that Dorothy died.

“Friend to Animal &Man..”.

Duane is survived by his spouse, Joseph Neil McGinnis of Lakeland, FL and New York City, sister-in-law Marilyn Doll of Independence, Missouri, nephews (and spouses) David, James (Amy), John (Anna), Paul, John, Kendle (Michelle) and Randle, and 7 grand-nieces and grand-nephews and one great-grand-nephew. He will also be sorely missed by the entire purebred dog community in the United States and around the world. Duane and Joe were married July 11, 2016. Having got- ten together July 25, 1978, that marked thirty-eight years of business and personal partnership. It may be the longest engagement in recorded history. It was Duane’s greatest dream that the relationship culminate in a wedding, and it took place in a house they designed on land they’d owned since the 1970s and on which is a small, protected graveyard in which all their dearest canine (and one feline) friends rest for all time. Duane himself was buried in Winfield, Kansas, on August 6th of this year, next to his parents and not far from the Caney Valley Farms that as a child he proud- ly called home. A memorial service/celebration will be also held later this year near his adopted town of Lakeland, Florida where he lived since 1979. Duane and Joe requested that anyone wishing to make a gesture would do so to TAKE THE LEAD at www.takethelead.org, and want to extend their thanks to the many, many friends who made donations to Take The Lead in Duane’s name. The inscription on Duane’s monument will say “Friend To Animal and Man,” and that pretty much describes this wonderful man who will be greatly missed. W hile cleaning out papers and looking at Top Notch Toys through the years I could not help but start leafing through old issues. After all, this magazine has been in print for 34 years—ever since Joe McGinnis and Duane Doll saw the need for a way to promote the Pekingese and Toy dogs that they always loved. It was hard to put TNT down once I started down memory lane. Just about all of us started with a pet that we loved, for some reason became inter- ested in dog shows and showing dogs and the rest is history. Your first show dog was probably not one you would show today, but you learned from that experience with excitement, frustration, sometimes anger and on occasion the thrill of vic- tory. Wow, was that first win the most exciting thing that ever hap- pened to you? A professional handler made that success for you while you watched from ringside or sat at home by the phone waiting for results.

Then came the desire to breed your, hopefully, new champion and the search was on to find the perfect choice for breeding. Maybe you found a men- tor who would help you make a good decision and you were hooked on our wonderful sport. I remember it well and in particu- lar when browsing through old issues, I never thought at the time it was his- tory in the making. By now you believe you can successfully show your own dog and off to conformation classes and matches you go, nervous, feeling up to the challenge and making plans to be a successful owner handler. Once again, wow, you win your first point! Noth- ing like that feeling will come again and looking through old Top Notch Toys many of you were there with your first everything in the dog world including your first ad. I was one of them! Many of you who are still around progressing from breeding, showing, on to judging and acquiring groups oth- er than Toys with great success and expertise. Ah the

memories along the way, as well as the tears, but look at all of us that are still doing what we know best and we always find something exciting about it. This saying hangs in my office here at TNT along with framed copies of many front and back covers and a few of my own old ads: “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by moments that take our breath away.” Those of you who have wonderful memories, write your stories and send them to me. You all have them! Remem- ber, inquiring minds want to knowwhat is going on in your dog show world. Watch for new and important people and dogs in TNT—be one of them! M ost dog owners I know think that their dogs are smart. Maybe so. But Papillons are smart! Crazy smart! In October of 2014, I wrote an article for Top Notch Toys entitled, “How Smart Are the Toy Breeds?” I shared the research published in The Intelligence of Dogs: Canine Con- sciousness and Capabilities by Stanley Coren. Coren used data correlated from questionnaires sent to Obedience judg- es. He ranked 133 breeds and described those in the top ten as understand- ing new commands in less than five exposures and obeying a command the first time it was issued 95% of the time. Papillons ranked #8, the only Toy breed in the top ten. I was not surprised. I am still rolling on the floor laugh- ing about a big news story that hit the media recently. It seems research- ers in Budapest trained 13 dogs to lie motionless in an MRI scanner so that their brains could be studied while they listened to their trainers’ voices through headphones. Dear reader, you will not believe the results! It seems dogs really do understand some of what we are saying! Really! I could have saved them a lot of time and trouble, had they only come to my house to observe my Papillons. They would have learned that they have a very substantial vocabulary. For this piece, I am not going to rely on published studies. I just want to share my own experience living with Papillons. Please indulge me for a bit while I brag about my fur babies. I know every Conformation dog knows how to gait and self-stack. But my Papillons will self-stack on command with a wave of my index fin- ger. At the conclusion of the down and back, my current Special will cock his head for expression at my verbal cue.

They know all the Obedience commands, such as sit, stay, come, heel, down, stand and wait. Moreover, they know most of those commands with hand signals alone and no verbal cue. My Papillons are titled in Rally (Advanced and Excellent) and know the numerous stations that need to be correctly performed in the ring. That would include a come front, an auto-sit, a finish to the right and a finish to the left. They can be sent over a jump and return to a heel position. They can do pivots, figure-eights and backs. One of my Papillons is trained for Canine Freestyle and can do an entire routine to “Singing in the Rain”. He weaves between my legs as I walk, circles around my legs in both direc- tions, jumps over my leg and even jumps over another dog. He is also learning Agility and so when approach- ing an obstacle, he will go through a tunnel, over jumps, through a tire, weave through six poles, walk over a teeter and wait on the table. I’ve noticed that more and more dogs in Agility competition are Papillons. They are perfectly suited to the sport as their intelligence is only matched by their enthusiasm. They know lots of tricks. They can spin and twist in both directions, touch a target, turn on a touch light, jump through my arms, roll over and jump up to take a treat from my mouth. They know how to take a bow, speak, give a high five, put paws up and get in a basket. One of the more challeng- ing tasks to teach a dog is to mirror your movements. My girl can do the Hokey Pokey. I put out my right foot and tap it, she puts out her left paw and taps and vice-versa. Then she spins first on the ground and then on her hind feet. That same little bitch did some Tracking training. She can find a glove

that I dropped a hundred yards away by tracking my footsteps. I’ve also taught her a tiny bit of herding commands. She knows “Away to me” and “Come by”. Sadly, I have no livestock for her to herd for I am sure she would love that. I once read that dogs have a very limited sense of time. Ha! Every dog I know can tell when dinner time is approaching. My Papillons are no exception. I know, too, because that is when they become really affectionate and I get lots of puppy kisses. They lie at the front door when the time gets close for Dad to get home from work. And somehow, they know when a television show has reached its conclusion and I am about to turn off the TV. I haven’t figured that one out yet, but before I reach for the remote they are already jumping up. Like lots of dogs, they know what it means when they see me with a piece of luggage. I have learned to hide my suitcase until the very last minute. But they also get very excited when I take off my watch, something so much more subtle. They know that is the first thing I do when getting ready to go into the pool and they get ready to wait poolside for me to throw nice, wet, juicy tennis balls for them to catch. I am delighted with how much I was able to teach them. But in addition to me teaching them, they have taught me a few things, too. They taught me to step away from the computer and go out- side to play, the benefits of a long walk and showed me how to greet everyone we meet enthusiastically. They taught me what different barks mean. The “Someone’s at the door!” bark is quite different from the one that means “Isn’t it dinnertime?” So they understand my language and I am learning to under- stand theirs. I just wish I could teach them to answer the phone.

TOY DOG CLUB OF ARKANSAS by PATTY MONTEZ

T he Toy Dog Club of Central Arkansas held their annual fall specialty on Sep- tember 30, 2016, at the fabu- lous Convention Center in the histori- cal town of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. Once again, many of the nation’s top Toy dogs from Washington State to Florida were welcomed with southern hospitality, great prizes and sincere appreciation for their participa- tion at our show. The overall winner was GCH Tamarin Tailback, once again taking top honors and having his name engraved one more time on our beauti- ful challenge trophy, donated by Doll- McGinnis Publishing. Our three Judges, Carol P. Smith, Carol Jean Nelson and Mark Lucas, each brought their A game and had many awesome dogs to examine. Several first time exhibitors were also present and I was so happy to see our judges taking time to encourage these entrants and give a little help coach- ing as well. This small amount of kind- ness made great impressions on these entrants, as they expressed to me that they were very intimidated among the professionals and this encourage- ment gave them the confidence to try again. So happy that our show may still have an impact on the new exhibitors as well as top winners in the country. The American Pomeranian Club was holding a national the following day and Judge Carol Smith had her hands full with the multitude of gorgeous Poms getting their last chance to show before the Nationals. We want to thank all of the exhibitors and can’t wait to see them at next year as well. Many thanks to the TDCCA members for helping through- out the year and special thanks to Brian Leonard, Jean Smith, Liz Handke, Cheryl Anderson and Christine Anderson for their time and energy in preparation and execution of a show well run.

THE BIEWER TERRIER A BREED WORTHY OF DISTINCTION by GAYLE PRUETT

W e owe a debt of gratitude to Werner and Gertrude Biewer for not throw- ing the baby out with the bath water. Although this breed started out as a complete surprise to the Biewers, they were intrigued with the coloring and decided to continue devel- oping this little tri-colored beauty for the shear purpose of bringing joy and happiness to their owners. The Biewer Terrier loves to be loved and will return that love sevenfold; they will literally wrap their arms around your neck and hug you as long as you will let them. They enjoy entertaining you with their peculiar little antics and games devel- oped with the sole purpose of keeping your undivided attention on them. It is not uncommon to see the Biewer Ter- rier smiling back at you, as they demon- strate just how much they truly love you and are happy to be in your company. The Biewer Terrier being a new breed requires particular attention to the features that make them so excep- tional and extraordinary. It goes without saying that health is always our number one concern when breeding. We are striving to eradicate any issues that may pop up during the course of establishing our breed. The personality and striking colors of the Biewer Terrier sets it apart from any other. No amount of training can turn a poorly bred, dull Biewer Ter- rier into a robust, whimsical and loving Biewer Terrier. Breeding any breed is a huge undertaking and responsibil- ity. A person owes the public the best possible specimen they can produce in health, temperament, structure and in all aspects, to be as sound as possible. Anybody can produce puppies, but it takes a special person to breed correctly. The Biewer Terrier breed has been especially harrowing due to the differ- ent theories behind the beginning of the breed. For this reason, the breeders that chose the correct path to breed and develop this magnificent dog deserve recognition and gratitude for their

loyalty and faithfulness. Mrs. Biewer’s steadfast friendship and understanding through the tribulations of introducing the Biewer Terrier to the general pub- lic had proven to be invaluable. We are thankful to the breeders throughout the world that are taking this responsi- bility seriously so that the general pub- lic will be able to enjoy the qualities of the Biewer for a lifetime.

Dogs displaying the choco- late/liver coloring are considered a disqualification from the show ring in hopes of discouraging the breeding of off colors. The board has always consid- ered what is best for the breed and we feel we have to acknowledge all things concerning the Biewer Terrier. We are looking at all aspects of the breed in order to avoid any issue five or ten years down the line. The BTCA; Biewer Terrier Club of America, Inc. continues to assist those countries interested in gaining recogni- tion for the Biewer Terrier with their respective kennel clubs. We are con- tributing to the Meet the Breeds events within the AKC arena to heighten pub- lic awareness of the Biewer Terrier and other outside venues that host breed education booths. We take every oppor- tunity to educate the public about the Biewer Terrier and wonderful qualities that make the Biewer so special. Adding to the many details that make the Biewer Terrier so unique is the fact that it is the first breed in the history of professional dog breeding and showing, that was proven to be a purebred due to an extensive genetic study. Customar- ily, there is strict documentation of all pedigrees and breedings when devel- oping a new breed. Immaculate record keeping is of the utmost importance. It was accepted into the FSS; Foundation Stock Service of AKC; American Kennel Club just eight years after first applying for recognition. This was an important step in furthering the development of the purebred Biewer Terrier. The AKC is a wealth of information and is anx- ious to help new breeds develop prop- erly using all tools available. As the Biewer Terrier continues to warm the heart of everyone they come in contact with, you can expect to see this breed among the most desired breed on Earth.

The Biewer Terrier has many talents so you will see them in the show ring taking top honors in conformation with Best in Groups and Best in Shows. Their versatility is giving them the same rec- ognition in agility events. Many have found their way into the modeling busi- ness, showing off their beauty on the runway for some of the best clothes designers in the dog industry and many of the top dog magazines are using them to promote products widely used by all animals. Due to the acceptance of the breed by AKC/FSS in 2014, the popular- ity of the Biewer Terrier has steadily increased throughout the world with both pet owners and breeders alike. With popularity growing so has the desire to obtain AKC regulations on their dogs. Our procedure for accepting non-BTRA registered dogs has always been to use the Mars genetic test for establishing whether a dog is a pure- bred or not. We also require a coat color analysis, to ensure the dog meets the coloring set forth in the AKC and BTRA accepted standard. We are finding that the Biewer Terrier carries a recessive gene for the chocolate/liver coloring. With this
