THOUGHTS ON IMPORTING AND EXPORTING? Importing and exporting is per- fectly acceptable, providing they are done for the right reasons. Importing would be to enhance the qualities you already have within your kennel. The litters that we program are primarily for us to breed a little star for our show- team. We mindfully do not breed litters with the intention of having puppies as monetary gain. Should we be fortunate to have two gems of similar ages then we carefully consider the kennel that would give them a forever home and have the knowledge and enthusiasm for the show ring campaign. We have been very fortunate with our imports all have loving homes and have achieved top honors in Denmark, the US, New Zealand, Iceland and Australia. This has given us great pride and satisfaction, for our beloved breed. 4. TO DATE; WHICH DOGS DO YOU FEEL HAVE CON- TRIBUTED MOST TO YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM? Probably presently; Ch Gleniren Nikolia Mania Sunshoo and Ch Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo. But this could be expanded greatly when you view the pedigrees breed lines, there are so many dogs within the pedigrees that should be given top honors. 5. WHAT IS YOUR PET PEEVE IN THE SHOW/ BREEDING WORLD. We tend to concentrate on what we wish to achieve and are focused on our goals. As long as we have managed to achieve this, we are happy. 6. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU CONSIDER GROOMING WHEN YOU ARE SHOWING A DOG? Daily grooming and presentation is paramount if you wish to reach the highest level. Put the work in and it will pay dividends. 7. DO YOU HAVE A FOR- MULA FOR BREEDING? DO YOU INBREED, LINE-BREED OR OUTCROSS AND WHY? We personally have a carefully pro- grammed basis for breeding. Other- wise you are running around in circles, you must know what you wish your

breed-line to achieve and keep that pic- ture in your vision. Not many breeders appear to line breed these days; many prefer to have a little bit of this that and a little bit of that. We do line breed, but we have over a period of time chosen to outcross. If you have a certain type that you wish to retain then an outcross mat- ing would be followed by a line-bred mating for the offspring. Otherwise the pedigree line could easily become a Countries have different standards so not a simple one to answer. For the UK our feelings are that the head study of two thirds to a third with a good stop and rise must be retained, other- wise you will get the 50/50 heads that are not significant to the dainty head. Height standard here in the UK is 8"-11". The Papillon size has increased over the years. A superb Papillon of 8" would really struggle with judges compared to an oversized Papillon, this should not be so. To give you an idea of the increase in size, some critiques have quoted Travis as being of the smaller size, this is not correct as he is 10 ¼ " and certainly well mish-mash, thus losing type. 8. DO YOU THINK THE CURRENT STANDARD IS ADEQUATE? within the middle height bracket. 9. WHERE DO YOU HOUSE YOUR DOGS AND WHELP YOUR BITCHES? Our dogs have their own fully equipped, centrally heated Pap Pad. This is not a kennel environment. It has a lounge, bedroom, rear lounge, kitchen and grooming room. There are three outside runs and three under- cover tiled runs. There is also a puppy chalet for youngsters to get introduced or bitches in season. When a bitch is in whelp, she is in the house and has her litter in my bedroom.

Puppies and mother stay in the house until 16 weeks or longer. This depends on the maturity of puppies and mother’s requirements. 10. AT WHAT AGE DO YOU DETERMINE A PUPPY TO BE SHOW QUALITY? Papillons are exceedingly difficult. You can have a glorious puppy at six weeks and it all goes pear-shaped when the head changes. You can have a beau- tiful 12-month-old and it just doesn’t blossom as an adult. On the other hand you can have a little one that from the first walk across the whelping box it catches your eye and just gets better and better. We have been lucky enough for this to happen three times to us and they all have gone on to great things. As in life, you can have someone that is good at what they are and then you can have someone that has special sprinkle of fairy dust and are great. Think of any human super star and the dogs are the same. They have that spe- cial ingredient of God making them at one with themselves and talent. 11. WHAT IS THE GREAT- EST HEALTH CONCERN FOR YOUR BREED TODAY. For us personally, we don’t have an issue with any health concerns. 12. IF YOU WERE NOT INVOLVED WITH SHOWING DOGS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Life has many avenues which work along side the hobby you have at that present time. Twenty-five years being involved with Papillons, I cannot see us not caring for the breed and would at all costs continue to nurture and maintain the butterflies and moths that we love so dearly.
