Top Notch Toys - November 2016

he just came in from the fields, which one would you choose? I don’t advocate sculpting or stripping coat but basic cleanliness and tidying of feet goes a long way. 7. DO YOU HAVE A FOR- MULA FOR BREEDING? DO YOU INBREED, LINEBREED OR OUTCROSS AND WHY? I tend to linebreed and occasion- ally inbreed. Occasional outcrosses are necessary, but I am more excited about the linebred dogs where I know what to expect. I think our standard could be more specific particularly regarding move- ment. My theory is that the authors assumed that everyone had common sense and would know the basics of structure as it influences movement. Sadly, that is not always true. 9. WHERE DO YOU HOUSE YOUR DOGS AND WHELP YOUR BITCHES? The dogs all live in the house and I have not helped a litter in a long time. We have no overnight vet services in 8. DO YOU THINK THE CURRENT STANDARD IS ADEQUATE?

our town and I lost two puppies rushing a bitch for an emergency C-sectional to the emergency clinic 45 minutes away. 10. AT WHAT AGE DO YOU DETERMINE A PUPPY TO BE SHOW QUALITY? I am not sure of the show potential of a puppy until it is about a year old. Many of our dogs are finished as pup- pies, but the keepers have to have the potential to go on as specials. At a year the adult coat is at least coming in, the bite is determined and the attitude in the ring is settled. 11. WHAT IS THE GREAT- EST HEALTH CONCERN FOR YOUR BREED TODAY? We now have tests for NADS and some types of PRA. These are obviously helpful in making breeding choices. Personally, I feel patella issues are prev- alent in our breed and are not regarded as a problem often enough. 12. IF YOU WERE NOT INVOLVED WITH SHOWING DOGS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? If I were not showing dogs, I would probably still be working with Thor- oughbreds on the race track. The attrac-

tion there is the first horse across the finish line wins. As my husband says, “You can’t cheat an electronic timer.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR I am Michelle Navarre and with my husband of 49 years, Dick, I have been fortunate enough to discover the Papil- lon breed and show them for the past few decades. We joke we downsized from horses to Cardigans to the Paps. Several established breeders gave us our start and we will always be grate- ful to them. Our first homebred cham- pion Pap was BISS GCH CH Micdic’s Olympic Gold, CD, RN. I am blissfully retired and Dick telecommutes as a consultant for IBM, so we are able to travel the western US showing the dogs. We keep our numbers small so everyone travels with us and they are the joy of our golden years.

1. WHAT BREED CHARAC- TERISTICS ARE MOST IM- PORTANT TO YOU WHEN YOU PLAN A LITTER? The most important thing for Gleni- ren Sunshoo is to retain our head type. This sounds easy, however it is one of the most difficult things to achieve on a continual basis. We are happy that we have continually been able to do so. 2. WHICH DOG THAT YOU HAVE BRED DO YOU FEEL COMES CLOSEST TO THE STANDARD IDEAL? For this question I would have to give three of our Top dogs. For the dogs; it would have to be for the complete package Ch Gleniren Shootin Starmaker Sunshoo, “Travis”. Travis within the breed has achieved in history more than any other UK Papillon. Over the last three years, he has been truly remark- able. He is the ultimate show-man,

his confirmation does not allow him to stand wrong, free-flowing move- ment, beautiful head and ear-shape, with a silky coat to complete a magi- cal picture. Many accolades have come his way including Top Dog All Breeds 2015. A Papillon has never achieved this ultimate accolade before. Travis was Top Toy 2015 and will again be Top Toy 2016 and also at the three-quarter way mark for 2016 is runner-up Top Dog All Breeds 2016. Full results for 2016 are not available till the end of the year. Travis has achieved four BIS at all breed championship shows, twelve Toy Group 1 awards and is the male Chal- lenge Certificate record holder with 42cc’s. For the bitches it would have to be Ch Gleniren Starlight Kisses, “Star- let”. Starlet has the feminine ability to win hearts. The most exquisite head and fringing, pretty, dainty and yet moved with drive in a lady like way. Starlet was Top Papillon for four consecutive years

2006-2009 and Top puppy 2005. She is currently the Breed Record Holder with 43 cc’s. For the Phalenes; our beauti- ful Ch Gleniren Tres Mannefico Sun- shoo, “Efico”, made UK history for the moth variety. She is a tri-colour with a beautiful Papillon head shape and cur- tain, front falling ear fringing. I say front falling because some Phalenes their ears fall more to the side. As a Pha- lene should be, she was a Papillon shape in every way except her ears being dropped. Here in the UK, Papillons and Phalenes compete together for a single Challenge Certificate. At the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club annual awards she was Top Bitch 2011 and was Top Papillon 2012. The first time a Phalene had achieved this top honour. Efico has 22 cc’s and is the Phalene Breed Record Holder. 3. PAPILLONS ARE AN INTERNATIONAL BREED.
