OUR TOTALLY TERRIFIC TOYS AT THE HOLIDAYS

by BONNIE GUGGENHEIM TNT Advertising Director & Associate Editor

T oy dogs are more than spe- cial… they are fabulous show dogs, wonderful companions to loving owners, outstand- ing service dogs and protectors. They think they are the size of a Doberman or Rottie with a bark that alerts the entire household. That is one big bark! They are smart, clever, funny, spoiled, darling, delightful and totally terrific. Our wonderful Toys are also in a very competitive group and are strong com- petition in the Best in Show ring. Check the ratings published in Top Notch Toys . I’m hoping the readers of TNT will email me old photos for pub- lication in a future issue, I’d like to have a couple pages of win pic- tures, famous dogs of the past, famous people from years ago, including handlers and judges. There is no cri- teria except that they be Toy dogs or Toy-related people. Email me anytime at bonnie@dmcg.com. How many of you check out our Facebook page? All ads are posted dur- ing the month of publication so you can share with interested people in and out of the country; plus, the entire magazine is online at no cost to read- ers so your ads gain a lot of exposure! You can also order older copies of Top Notch Toys if you have articles or photos you want to keep or review. Many out-of-the- country judges and exhibitors read our Facebook pages that are constantly updated. A new exhibitor asked me for some advice on how to move for- ward in dogs and questioned why some breeders and show people have more than one breed. There was a time I felt strongly if you spe- cialized in your particular breed, truly studied and focused exclusively on that breed, it would lead to greater success.

That theory does work to a degree, but to truly learn about dogs you will benefit by becoming familiar with other breeds but not necessarily Toys because you will pick up wisdom from a wider group of friends and exhibi- tors. If you have the opportunity, go to different parts of the country to look at your breed and others--pay atten- tion to the strengths and weaknesses in that geographical area. Judges see it every time they leave a local area and you should, too. As a former AKC judge and success- ful owner handler with years of expe- rience in all aspects of the dog world, I’m here to help you. Together we can create winning ads, plan effective cam- paigns and show off your

new champions as well as your Group and Best in Show winners. Represen- tation in TNT gets the word out and lets the fancy know about your suc- cess. Everyone has a budget and I can work within your guidelines to pro- mote you and your dogs in our award- winning magazine. It is a collectible that belongs on your coffee table. Won’t you join us? Email or call me to discuss advertising, but be sure you stop by our booth at the AKC/Royal Canin show or see me ringside at this exciting and wonderful show. This is the perfect place to purchase gifts for your dog-loving friends and check out the many, many booths. Happy Holidays and have winning New Year! Remember, inquiring minds want to know. See you soon! Bonnie bonnie@dmcg.com 863.738.8848

THE MEANING OF SPORTSMANSHIP by KYLE POTTS From the TNT archives, September 2014

M aybe today is a good day to share something I have been thinking about. As we sit outside the dog show ring and watch the judg- ing taking place in the ring, we all judge alongside that AKC judge and we either agree or disagree with what is winning that day. It’s okay to disagree with the judge, but I get so discouraged when I over- hear conversations such as “Can you believe she put that up...”, “Of course he won, he is from her hometown...” or “She put up the handler, what a surprise...”. We are all guilty of these thoughts, myself included, but maybe we need to be more mindful of our tone of voice and how loud we make those comments and who around us may be within earshot. Or better yet, maybe we need to not say that ringside at all. We are not in the ring, we don’t have our hands on the dogs and we don’t see in their mouths. There is so much more to judging than just sitting ringside and making snap decisions. Good sportsmanship should be first and foremost in our minds as we go to the shows. Congratulate the winners and save the nasty critiques for your hotel room, if you must express them. I just got home from the Houston Chihuahua Club back-to-back special- ties and two Toy Shows. This weekend was all about spending time with great friends and having fun showing two very young dogs belonging to my friend Peggy. I was able to see the best and the worst of sportsmanship at the shows this weekend, and hopefully sharing that here will allow us all to remember that our behavior does impact others, even when we don’t think it is seen or heard. The bad sportsmanship came into play as I was walking out of the ring today with the young male I am show- ing. This is only his second show, and he is not fully trained. He goes around

On the other side of the coin, I wit- nessed two nice examples of good sportsmanship this weekend, and I felt compelled to comment on them. The first came about when an exhibitor fin- ished their Long Coat bitch yesterday and when asked, said that she planned to pull her today. However, there was no major in dogs and to pull the bitch would have broken the major in bitches today. When I went back and asked, the exhibitor agreed to leave her bitch in the classes and even suggested some- one else take her in and show her. As sometimes happens in those cases, that same bitch won again today. She is a nice bitch, and deserved to win so I have no problem with it. The point is, the exhibitor realized that she was allowing at least two other people to have a chance at a major and she readily agreed to do it. The second act of good sportsman- ship occurred as we watched Junior Showmanship this morning. One young Novice handler was obviously totally unaware of how to gait or stack her dog. She struggled with the lead, hold- ing it at the very end of the lead and therefore the dog wandered around all over the ring as she went around. It was clear that she had not been shown how to gather her lead up or control her dog. Right after Juniors, one of the Chihuahua exhibitors got up out of her chair, went out in the hallway with the young girl and gently showed her how to gather the lead into the palm of her hand and therefore have more control of the dog. Juniors and new exhibitors are the life’s blood of our sport. If we don’t encourage them, they will give up and go away and the old timers who “know everything” will die off. We owe it to the sport and our breeds to spend more time helping and less time criticizing others. We owe it to ourselves and our breed to practice being a little bit nicer and a little less self-serving.

the ring in a nice smooth gait, never drops his tail and is for the most part, very well behaved. The initial part of the table exam still causes him a little worry; he may lean back a tad, but recovers immediately and then all is well. He does not know about dogs oth- er than Chihuahuas yet however, so all the different Toy dogs outside the ring were a great concern to him this week- end. Upon exiting the ring (after win- ning Winners Dog), he was startled and hit the end of his lead. I simply reeled him in and picked him up. Unfortu- nately it seemed that two exhibitors sit- ting right in front of the ring gate were thrilled to see one of my dogs act up and they immediately gave each other a wide eyed look and started talking behind their hands while staring at the dog with smirks on their faces. How many of us have had that untrained dog who needs to experi- ence ring life and the sights, sounds and smells of a dog show to grow into a con- fident dog? Why is it noteworthy and a source of enjoyment to see someone with a dog that is stressed and needs assurance? Why would that give some- one pleasure to not only witness it, but then to be able to criticize the dog and the handler for it? It’s not the first time I have experienced it and it won’t be the last, but it did make me shake my head.

JUST JUDY’S THOUGHTS

by JUDY THOMPSON, OHA

“CAN WE CLONE OUR GREATEST SHOW DOGS? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, SHOULD WE?”

D og breeders have been using frozen semen and artificial insemination (AI) for quite some time. This process enabled them to breed to sires in distant locales and even to sires that had long since crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. It is certainly nothing new. Then in July of 2015, seven puppies were born through in vitro fertiliza- tion (IVF). This was the culmination of attempts since the 1970s, when it was first successful in humans. But the pro- cess proved more difficult in canines. Canine sperm cannot immediately fer- tilize an egg. The sperm have a coating that must be broken down by the chem- icals in a bitch’s uterus. That chemical bath removes the coating that protects the sperm’s DNA information. It also helps the sperm burrow into the egg so that the DNA can be deposited. In addition, bitch’s eggs are also not imme- diately viable. They must remain in the oviducts for some time before fertiliza- tion can take place. It took scientists many years to replicate the chemicals in the uterus and learn the correct timing to create new cells, cells which could

then be frozen and later implanted in a surrogate bitch. In this instance, 19 embryos were transferred to the host bitch. Of the seven that survived, five were from Beagle-Beagle pairings and two were from Beagle-Cocker Spaniel pairings. Apparently, scientists were curious as to whether or not they could success- fully cross breed using IVF. (I am guess- ing the bitch herself was grateful she did not have a litter of 19 to care for, and I fear for any future host bitch that may find herself in that situation.) But our scientific accomplishments did not stop there. Since 1996, we have had the ability to clone mammals from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. Dolly the sheep was cloned that year after

227 failed attempts. Dolly lived for roughly half the average life span of a Finn Dorset and developed arthritis at the age of four. That brings us to two questions: can we clone our greatest show dogs? And more importantly, should we? Let’s first look at what happened when cloning was brought to another sport—polo. Aiken Cura is the name of a chestnut stallion with a white blaze beloved by Adolfo Cambiaso, a gifted Argentinean polo player. In 2006, after an important polo championship, Aiken Cura’s left foreleg suddenly gave out and had to be amputated. Before he was forced to euthanize his stallion, Cambi- aso asked a veterinarian to save a small sample of cells from the horse’s neck, freeze it and store it in a laboratory. Fast forward to today. Aiken Cura E01, another chestnut stallion with a white blaze, is galloping across polo fields in Argentina. He is the product of cloning technology and he is not alone. Cambiaso partnered with two wealthy polo enthusiasts to form Crestview

“DOG BREEDERS COULD EASILY BE THINKING HOW AMAZING IT WOULD BE TO CLONE ONE OF THE GREAT ONES...”

Genetics and that company has created more than 70 cloned polo ponies. Inter- national polo players have been willing to pay over $120,000 to own one. Branching out from polo to thor- oughbred racing, Crestview now has three clones which are genetic rep- licas of Storm Cat, who died in 2013. A descendant of Secretariat, Storm Cat once commanded a stud fee of $500,000. Three foals sired by Storm Cat were purchased by the same buyer for a total cost of $16.2 million. So for some, the cost of a cloned descendant is not necessarily a deterrent. Dog breeders could easily be thinking how amazing it would be to clone one of the great ones... a BIS at a prestigious show, a Platinum Grand Champion, a dog with 100 Best in Shows or an All-Breed Ranking of #1. They might well be thinking that hav- ing that dog in their breeding program would be a dream come true. But hold on, wait just a minute! It might just turn out to be a nightmare. The whole point of cloning a great show dog would be to reproduce, exactly, a dog that looked identical to the donor dog. We cannot assume, how- ever, that would be the case. A kitten named CC (for Copycat) was cloned in 2001. The donor was a calico cat named

Rainbow, but CC was born a black and white tiger tabby. The two cats have the identical genetic material, so how could that be? It has to do with a process called x-inactivation, which happens normally in females to prevent them from having twice as much X-chromo- some activity as males. I have seen published photos of two Aiken Cura cloned foals. They both have white blazes, but while one has a nice symmetrical blaze, the other has one with more of a zig and a zag. While this makes no difference for a polo pony, it would be very important in a conformation dog. In some standards, the wrong facial markings are actually a disqualification. Did that great show dog have a fabu- lous presence in the ring? Would your new prospect have the same experi- ences as a pup, the same training, the same handler—even the same essen- tial personality? If not, chances are the clone might have very different results in competition. And how old would your new show prospect be at birth? Remember, the genetic material from the donor is taken from a mature show dog, per- haps five years old. That material will continue to age so that some genes in your newborn clone could be five

years old at birth! Thus, there is a huge potential for premature aging. Based on the fact that her telomeres were short, there is some basis to believe that some genes in Dolly the sheep had a biologi- cal age of six years when she was born. Finally, but most importantly, we need to consider the suffering of the dogs involved. Currently, a successful cloning happens in a small percentage of attempts. Think of all the pups des- tined to die just before birth or soon thereafter. And there is always the potential for abnormalities and deformi- ties, such as in the case of the cloned calf born with two faces. If, in the future, cloning technol- ogy advances to the point where it becomes affordable and feasible for dog breeders to employ, what are the ethi- cal questions that may arise for dog show competition? Athletic organi- zations ban performance enhancing drugs because it takes the human/nat- ural process out of competition. Will cloned dogs also be banned since sci- entific manipulation is not part of the natural breeding process? The next time lightning strikes, thunder claps and hailstones strike the earth, it may be a message from Terra Mater. Don’t mess with Mother Nature!

A Puppy’s Christmas

It’s the day before Christmas and all through the house, the puppies are squeaking an old rubber mouse. The wreath which had merrily hung on the door is scattered in pieces all over the floor. The stockings that hung in a neat little row now boast a hole in each one of the toes. The tree was subjected to bright-eyed whims, and now, although splendid, it’s missing some limbs. I catch them and hold them. “Be good,” I insist. They lick me, then run off to see what they’ve missed. And now as I watch them the thought comes to me, that theirs is the spirit that Christmas should be. Should children and puppies yet show us the way, and teach us the joy that should come with this day? Could they bring the message that’s written above, and tell us that, most of all Christmas is love.

BREEDER’S FORUM TOY FOX TERRIER

with DIANNE CLARK

1. When and where did you first become interested in your breed? I grew up with the TFT. Mitzi was the first and only dog I had as a child. 2. What attracted you to the breed? We were looking for a smaller dog to travel with us while we were running AKC hunt tests. I remember how fun the TFT was so I filled out an applica- tion with Seattle Purebred Dog Assoc. It took 3 years until finally we adopted BOB! Then I was once again addicted, so the story began! 3. Do you inbreed, linebreed or outcross? Why? I have done all three having by best success with an outcross, a line breed back 4 generations. 4. How do you house your dogs? All our TFTs live in our home run free with us. Two sleep with us; we do have to monitor two, because they have personality differences. 5. Do you feed supplements? Currently we are feeding a dry grain free kibble. I do supplement a bitch before she is bred and during puppy rearing with 4Life Transfer Factor®. 6. Where to you whelp your bitches? Bitches whelp in our bedroom and a whelping pen. 7. How and when do you deter- mine a show quality puppy? Typically they pick themselves. I don’t like to pick too soon; 8 and 12 weeks seem to be pretty true for us. 8. At what age do you begin train- ing? Please share training tips.

13. What grooming tips or hints would you like to share? Grooming is pretty simple—nails! Start them when they are young! 14. What makes this breed a great show dogs as well as a com- panion? They enter the ring full of confi- dence! ‘Pick me, pick me!’ Talk about a STRUT!!! They love you and are so loyal! 15. What tips or advice would you offer the newcomer? Do research! Don’t just buy the win- ner of the week. Look at health on the parents; see where the pups are raised. Will they mentor you? 16. How do you determine the stud dog you will select to breed to your bitch? I look at both the pedigree and the type. Fault the bitch and see where and if the Stud can improve. 17. If you were starting a ken- nel would you buy a bitch first or a dog? Dog! I love my dogs! They seem to be more loyal to me. Easy to keep don’t worry about heats. 18. What three words best describe your breed? Dynamic, Loyal, Confident. 19. What is the single biggest mis- conception about your breed? That they are not just lap dogs. My TFTs are all hunters, which is what they were original bred to do. 20. What is the most defining characteristic of your breed? Head piece, confidence while mov- ing, tail carriage high and alert!

We don’t like to be too picky on a pup. Lead training is first… never pull the dog, have a treat in your hand to encourage! Show the bite, it is very important! Have the pup on your lap make it a game, “Show me the bite” then treat right away. Last is table… again make it a game; make sure the pup is secure in the environment! I use Happy Legs to get started, then move to the ground for a free stack. 9. Do you think your current standard is adequate? If not, what changes would improve it? Current standard is ok; though I wish some of the judges would under- stand it a bit better, especially in move- ment. I don’t think color should not be such an issue. 10. What is the greatest health concern to breeders today? For the most part the TFT is a fair- ly healthy little breed. We test all our breeding stock and they all have CHIC number, as well as an OFFA cardio exam. With today’s technology there is no reason not to test for PLL and CHG. Inexpensive tests to assure the future of the breed! 11. Is dental care important? Please explain. Yes, we do a yearly dental. As in most Toy breeds, teeth can be a prob- lem. They are also offered frozen chick- en necks and frozen bones. 12. What do you enjoy most about owning this breed? They are little clowns! Very loyal lov- ing breed, huge attitudes! Big dog in a little dog package.

“DO RESEARCH! DON’T JUST BUY THE WINNER OF THE WEEK.”

with CINDY ENROUGHTY

1. Tell us three conformation characteristics you consider criti- cal in your breeding program. I truly believe that form follows function. While I have had TFTs since 1965, I started in AKC conformation with Great Pyrenees. That taught me to look for soundness, clean movement and sufficient reach and drive. I am currently seeing short upper arms lead- ing to goose stepping as well as lack of angulation in the rear resulting in lack of drive in the show ring. 2. What dog that you have bred have you been most excited about and why? I am excited about every dog that I have bred. While I do have several BBE Champions, each and every litter is a delight and a challenge. 3. What are your thoughts on importing and exporting? As the Toy Fox Terrier is uniquely an American breed, I’ve not seen any actual importing. As far as exporting, I am excited that our breed is beginning to catch on in other countries. My one concern is that as breeders we are both concerned with the type of home/ken- nel the dogs are being sent into and that we are sending them our best exam- ples of the breed. I feel that sending anything but our best reflects poorly on the breeder and the breed. 4. To date, what has been your high point as a breeder?

I have truly enjoyed seeing TFTs that I have bred or co-bred doing well in the conformation ring. However, I receive the most satisfaction in seeing the joy that my puppies bring to their new owners. 5. What is your pet peeve in the show/breeding world? I am frequently frustrated by those who jump on the bandwagon of the “fla- vor of the month”. For example, the first few years of AKC recognition I saw many instanc- es of Judges putting up dogs with “all white bodies” over nicer dogs with color. I think breeders must have some awareness of the genetic mess that can result from breeding white to white. Paying attention to the standard and making sure that health clear- ances are completed are important to the breed. 6. Is there a grooming secret you would like to share? I am very happy to have a wash and wear breed. 7. Do you inbreed, linebreed or outcross and why? I feel that linebreeding and outcross- ing are important. Without linebreeding, you lose the things you cherish most and without outcrossing, you breed yourself into a corner. 8. Do you think your current standard is adequate?

I think the standard suits the breed fairly well. I do feel that nine DQ’s is a lot and the fact that five of them relate to color is a bit much. 9. Where do you house your dogs and whelp your bitches? I am a small hobby breeder, so all of my dogs live in my home. The bitches are whelped in my bedroom and all puppies are raised in my family room. 10. At what age do you determine a puppy to be show quality? I first evaluate the puppies at eight weeks of age. I then look at them again at 16 weeks of age. At that time I’m fairly confident of what they will become. 11. What is the greatest health concern for your breed today? There are three genetic tests being used for our breed. The test for CHg has been available for quite some time. The test for PLL became available to our breed a few years ago. As the testing has been completed by breeders who choose, these seem to be less of a prob- lem. The newest concern is SCA. While this test has been available for some time, it has only recently been applied to the TFT after affected dogs in the breed were diagnosed. 12. If you were not involved with showing dogs, what would you do? Have a life, go on vacation, afford to retire and be much less fulfilled.

with LILA FAST

1. Tell us three conformation characteristics you consider criti- cal in your breeding program. Level top line, square, well laid back shoulders and nice turn of stifle. 2. What dog that you have bred have you been most excited about and why? It would be Isaac. He is my first white and tan special. 3. What are your thoughts on importing and exporting? I sell very little and never have imported or exported. 4. To date, what has been your high point as a breeder?

9. Where do you house your dogs and whelp your bitches? My dogs live in the house and pup- pies are whelped in my bedroom. 10. At what age do you determine a puppy to be show quality? I evaluate my puppies at eight weeks and again at 12 weeks. 11. What is the greatest health concern for your breed today? Toy fox terrier are healthy, happy dogs but I do test for CHG PLL and SCA. 12. If you were not involved with showing dogs, what would you do? I would go to more basketball games and the tournaments.

My dogs being ranked and placing in the group as an owner handler 5. What is your pet peeve in the show/breeding world? Poor sportsmanship 6. Is there a grooming secret you would like to share? Brush teeth, keep the toe nails short and bathe before a show. 7. Do you inbreed, linebreed or outcross and why? I linebreed and outcross to establish a line. 8. Do you think your current standard is adequate? Yes.
