Top Notch Toys - September 2016

nominations from the club member- ship, is the Lifetime Achievement award. The 2016 recipient of this award was our fearless leader, Club President, Bruce Van Deman. Not only does he serve as our club President, but also as our AKC delegate and as the head of our judge’s education committee. The banquet attendees enjoyed a beautiful slide show of Bruce and his English Toy Spaniels dating back to the 1980s; his many years of love and dedication to the breed are greatly appreciated by us all. The night concluded with our annual auction emceed by the entertaining Ron Morgan. All auction items are donated and it is special to attendees because breed related items are frequently hard to come by and this event allows new treasures to go home with the highest bidders. Bidding was spirited and quite fierce, and highly entertaining to all. On Saturday, Judge Jason Hoke pre- sented exhibitors another opportunity to bring home trophies. The Variety Winners of the day were GCH Clus- sexx Cream and Crimson (that went on to take second place in the Toy group) and CH Southdown Fait Accompli. Fol- lowing the groups on Saturday night was the last club hosted event—the Sat- urday night pizza party and education seminar. The topic of the seminar was “Grooming the English Toy Spaniel” and had three presenters: 1) long-time breeder, Sue Jackson, 2) professional handler, Per Rismyhr and 3) owner- handler, Heather Reid. There was some- thing for everyone at this well attended final event. Questions were asked by

attendees, and frequently, all three pre- senters had something a little different to add. Although attendance dropped some- what after Saturday, there were still two more days of specialty shows that drew enough dogs for the winners to bring home five-point majors. Sunday’s judge was Mr. Eugene Blake. Much like the day before, he awarded the Blenheim & Prince Charles variety to GCH Clus- sexx and Cream and CH Southdown Fait Accompli as the King Charles & Ruby Variety Winner. Monday, the line- up changed a bit under Judge Janet Lobb, who awarded the Blenheim & Prince Charles Variety to GCH Sanchi Pleasant Surprise, owned by Dr. Bon- nie Miller, DVM and handled by Per Rismyhr. Per also handled CH South- down Fait Accompli to his third day in a row of victory in the King Charles & Ruby variety. It was an exhausting five-day mara- thon of shows and club events, but well worth it for all attendees. The hard work of the club and its membership guaranteed a little something for every- one. And whether you walked home with a ribbon or not, the camaraderie experienced among English Toy Span- iel fanciers is what brings us back, year after year. Now, we look forward to 2017, where new opportunity awaits for both renewing a common love of the breed as well as a challenge to breeders and exhibitors to bring their best and com- pete for their chance to bring home the next National Specialty winner.
