JUDGING THE POMERANIAN

by Dr. Geno Sisneros

J udging the Pomeranian is some- thing I think many judges make harder than it really is. While it is a toy or companion dog, it is a bred-down version of a much larger dog similar to a Keeshond, and in some countries their standards are the same. Most of the attributes of the larger spitz breeds still apply to the smallest member of this group, and these attributes are impor- tant to survival in the cold, snowy European climate from which the breed originated.

“You want to see a square within a circle, THE SQUARE BEING THE BODY OF THE DOG AND A CIRCLE BEING FORMED BY THE PROFUSE, HARSH DOUBLE COAT THAT IS TRIMMED ONLY FOR NEATNESS.”
