Top Notch Toys - October 2016

13. VIEWING THE ENTIRE TOY GROUP WHAT IS THE BIGGEST AREA OF IMPROVE- MENT IN THE LAST 25 YEARS AND WHAT AREA NEEDS WORK? On the whole the Toy Group has improved tremendously. Just last weekend in Lexington, Kentucky I judged most of the breeds and did the group. I wanted to leave! It was so outstanding; I did not know what I was going to do. Finally I gave myself a talking to. I had a multitude of group and best in show winners from which to choose; some I never judged before that placed and some I had just given groups to that did not place. It is all on the day like they say. I think Chihuahuas are at the top of the game, Pekes you cannot find a bad one, Min Pins and Papillons are strong, Jap Chins need work and Poms are losing their circle in a square. Pugs are super all over the country; Cavaliers are losing their soft melting expression. And while we are on expression why do the people showing coated breeds with top knots, puff it up and drop it between the eyes? It changes the look from pleasing and sweet to mean! Stop it please! 14. YOU’VE HAD A REMARKABLE CAREER. WHAT’S NEXT FOR BRADLEY JENKINS? I am almost complete with the Sporting Group. I think I lack seven breeds and then I am trying my best to understand Terriers, and I hope to judge them in the future. I will do other breeds that I love and that is all for me. I love the mental stimulation of judging against the breed standard.

Chihuahua I showed. They have to trust you to want to do right. They are hard to get to want to show. Ask the pro han- dlers! They look easy but do best with their person. 9. WHAT IS YOUR PET PEEVE AS A JUDGE? My pet peeve is ribbon snatchers! Poor sports. It is not the end of the world if you don’t win. If you are unhappy, find something else to occupy your time—like knitting. 10. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE DAY IN DOGS. I have two with the same dog; Ch. Touche’s High Faluton’s all breed BIS, and his breed win in 1998 at The Garden. Both brought me to tears and I hyperventilated at the Garden! It was so much fun! 11. WHAT ABOUT YOUR TOUGHEST DAY? The toughest was the day I lost Flutie. I really do mean lost. He disappeared from my yard on the 4th of July about seven years ago. I looked for him for years and still do from time to time. 12. WHAT DOES AN OWNER-HANDLER HAVE TO DO TO BEAT THE “BIG NAMES?” What an owner handler has to do is have their dog trained, in condition mentally and physically, and groomed properly to beat the pros. That is what they do for a living so to be successful they are all that and more. Plus they are gracious losers.
