A ccording to statistics, the average dog person gets into dogs as a fun thing to do on weekends and feel it seems like a great family sport. They remain for five years and then quit either due to a lack of success, high cost of keeping dogs, showing or traveling and often it is simply too time consum- ing for the family. The saddest and most often heard reason is that it just isn’t fun. In those five years they may have had three litters, sold puppies, bred one of their males with one of their own or offered the dog at public stud. Some success may have come early on—or not—and they may or may not have offended serious breeders in the pro- cess. The majority of qualified mentors are not out soliciting new people and unless these newbies join some type of club they would not have access to those names or good connections. So then, how do we not only con- nect with new exhibitors and breeders, but guide them in the right direction and make it a fun experience for them? We dog folks are not always warm and welcoming for many reasons, but we do need to work on a friendly smile and an offer of help. Keep your comments positive on Facebook! Does our kennel club welcome new members or freeze them out at the first meeting? Would your specialty club like new members? How can you solicit potential good people and make them feel like a part of the club? How about the National Club? Many create so many road blocks that some folks simply lose interest in joining. Can you personally try and create a better and inclusive atmosphere for newcomers? Each one of us knows there is the greying of the dog world so we obvi- ously need to bring in new people who

AFFENPINSCHERS IN YELLOWSTONE!

I t is the Year of the Monkey and Affens took over Billings, Mon- tana for the Affenpinscher Club of America National Specialty on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 and the Sup- ported Entry on Tuesday, June 21st held in conjunction with the Yellowstone Valley KC shows. Jo Acton, the ACA President, did a fantastic job as show chairman and the weather was perfect, scenery spectacular and hospitality and show grounds fantastic. There were Affen fanciers from 13 states and Can- ada for two days of monkeying around! At the Supported Entry show, Dr. Mhairi Brown from England, a breeder- judge, did the honors with an entry of 34 (5-18-4-7) awarding winners to the BBE dog, Lunars Summer Soltice, owned by Alice Linnell of Massachusetts. Reserve also was from BBE, Ryzann’s Lestat Legacy of Ferlin, owned by Lee-Ann Shank-Brooks from Canada and Linda Ferris from Texas. Of the 13 bitches, a belge girl owned by Sheila and Monte Wymore and her breeder Lisa Carpen- ter was WB, Pramada’s Naughty Smidge of Saffron from Arizona. Reserve went to Cobbler’s Mary Jane at Ferlin owned
by Linda Ferris. The WB, “Spice”, went on to an Owner-Handled Group 4. From the beautiful line up of spe- cials, Dr. brown selected another belge bitch, GCH Yarrow Hi-Tech Drills N Skills, “Fiona”, owned by Dr. and Mrs. Truesdale and Milan Lint and bred by Mrs. Truesdale, Beth Sweigart and Letisha Wubbel. BOW was the bitch Spice. BOS was GCH Seamonkey’s Bazinga, owned and bred by Debra and Danielle Nelson from California and owned by his handler Tiffany Skinner from Washington. Selects were GCH Afpint Homme Singe at Ruzka, owners, D. Hichborn, T. Graham and K. Broder- ick from Florida and GCH Airescot Sun- set, owner Linda Baker, breeder Nenne Runsted of Sweden. As Dr. Brown is from the UK where only black Affens may be exhibited it was fun to see some dogs of varying color take home awards under her. Fiona and Ernesto Lara, her handler, went on to a Group First under Charles Trotter and BIS with Suzanne Dillon. The crowd was excited and loud to lead Fiona to victory. Northwest Affen Fanciers. Ernesto, Fiona’s handler, then gave another of his fantastic educational, but fun, grooming seminars. He was a bit tired after leaving home in Pennsylvania at 3 am that morning due to multiple travel disasters. The delays were a easier to handle after Fiona went BIS. Ernesto is a great groomer, handler and teacher, but most importantly a lover and supporter of our beloved Monkey Dogs. Wednesday we began bright and early with Joyce Standish of Nebraska sorting out the Puppy Sweeps and Vet- eran Sweeps. Her smile and laughter at their comic seriousness showed her enjoyment of this assignment. Best in Sweeps was a bitch from the 6-9 class, Ferlin’s Given by Zia at Enchante’s, own- ers Barry Leece and Cameron Riegel from New Mexico. Little “Zia” went on to RWB for a 3-point major in the regu- lar classes. Her handler, Barry was over the moon and his enthusiastic response left no doubt about his feelings. Zia was not phased at all and enjoyed all the attention like the princess she knows she is. Next Joyce enjoyed the veterans as they strutted their stuff enjoying the limelight. The winner was Ch. Ceterra’s Good Thing I’m Cute, an 11-year-old male from Winnipeg, owned by Sherry Galagan and Lorna Spratt. Our 2016 ACA National specialty judge was Suzanne Dillon from Texas. She had an entry of 35 Affenpinschers with lots of quality allowing many deci- sions and choices. It was as quality an entry as we have had in the past and being in Montana during the mid-week reflected the devotion and dedication of the Affen aficionados. All day there were treats, beverages and even water- melon and a beer refrigerator to keep exhibitors happy and hydrated. The WD was Dirty Harrie v Tani Kazari owned by Pramada Kennels and Lisa Carpenter from Arizona. “Harrie” went on the BOW to finish his AKC Championship with his handler, Dave Peat. WB was the RWB from the day before, Linda Ferris’ Cobbler’s Mary Jane at Ferlin. Our darling 6-9 puppy girl, Zia, was RWB and Barry Leece again celebrated with enthusiasm while Zia stood and watched. Mrs. Dillon took her time, delib- erated, re-tabled and moved dogs again before awarding the breed to GCH Yarrow Hi-tech Drills N Skills, Fiona. The BOS was Barry Leece and
