standard has many preferred attributes and no dis- qualifying faults. Deviations from the optimal are con- sidered in the overall type and balance. • While there are other differences, it should be noted that under the FCI Standard, Affenpinschers are in Group Two: “Pinschers, Schnauzers, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattledogs,” whereas under the American Kennel Club organization they are in the Toy Group. Ultimately, unless you are a judge, an exhibitor or a breed- er, international differences may not be of much interest. As owners and breeders of Enchante’ Kennels, both Cam- eron Riegel and myself are pursuing certification as Breed and Group Judges. We are authorized Affenpinscher Club of America mentors and presenters for Judges’ Education, and Cameron is currently Vice President of the Parent Club. So to us, the details are important, andwe are staunch advocates of breeder ethics, health testing, and conforma- tion to our breed standards as ameans of strengthening our breed now and into the future. If you are a lover of Affens or a prospective Affen owner, you are especially appreciated and encouraged to do your homework as you look for that special new Affen-addition to your household. The Affen- pinscher Club of America website and the American Ken- nel Club website are great resources to find out more about the breed, and to find reputable breeders who will provide invaluable insights into determining the right Affenpin- scher for you.

common internationally, other differences, such as allow- able color, size, and yes, interpretation of grooming fea- tures can be markedly different: • Under AKC standards, acceptable colors include black, silver, gray, black and tan, red, and beige, with no preference given to one color over another. In Europe, a variety of colors is noted in the breed’s history, but only black Affens may be shown. • Under the FCI’s description, “the coat on the head should be as hard, straggly and sticking out [sic] as pos- sible. It contributes essentially to themonkey-like gen- eral expression.” In practice, American standards also require a harsh Terrier-like coat, but the grooming on the head tends to look a bit more refined while still maintaining the monkey-like expression. The eye- brows and hair on the head “stands out” and “frames the face.” • AKC size standards differentiate between males and females, allowing females to be slightly longer-bodied to accommodate puppy growth. Preferred height at the withers is 9.5-11.5 inches. There is no American weight standard. However, the FCI standard states, “Height at withers: Dogs and bitches 25 to 30 cm” (12 inches) and “Weight: Dogs and bitches: appr. 4 to 6 kg.” (FYI: 6 kilograms is 14.8 pounds). • The FCI Affen standard is very detailed and pro- vides for a range of “faults,” including 12 faults, 8 se- rious faults, and 7 disqualifying faults.
