In modern history, the Papillon breed, was “discovered” by the Amer- ican public when the consummate showman, Kirby, was piloted to Best in Show at the Westminster Ken- nel Club by his owner, John Oulton, in 1999. By the way, if you think Gizmo from Stephen Speilberg’s Gremlins resem- bled a Papillon, it was not by accident. Mr. Speiberg was owned by a Pap at the time! Lauren Bacall, a modern queen of the silver screen, is devoted to her Papil- lon, Sophie. Sophie has appeared with Ms. Bacall when interviewed in her New York apartment and is well known in the neighborhood. Another noted actress, Glenn Close, not only owned a Papillon, but cheered him on to victory as he achieved his AKC Championship! A Papillon called Delta, owned by Lauren Wilson, re- ceived the AKC’s Award for Canine Excellence in 2000. Delta was fea- tured twice on the 20/20 television show, introduced by both Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer. And dear to this author’s heart is the memory of her Papillon, Crown Prince, appearing onstage with Mar- sha Mason in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Not to be outdone, Prince’s daughter, Julianna, performed as Musetta’s dog in the Santa Fe Opera’s production of La Traviata.

BIO Retired from the US Senate staff, Washington DC, Jan Paulk lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with Papillons andAnatolian ShepherdDogs. She was hooked on the sport when her first show dog, a German Shepherd, went Best in Match in 1971. Jan finished her first Papillon in 1977, going Best ofWinners at Westminster Kennel Club, under Judge Edd Bivin. Active in the Papillon Club of America for 38 years, she has served as Chairman of Judges Educa- tion for nine years. A former Member of the Board of the Washington, DC, Animal Rescue League, she is now an active supporter of the Animal Shelters of Santa Fe and Espanola, New Mex- ico. Jan judges the Toy and Herding Groups, 26 Working Breeds, Juniors and BIS.
