IT’S NATIONALS SEASON! BE SEEN IN TOP NOTCH TOYS

by BONNIE GUGGENHEIM TNT Advertising Director & Associate Editor

T

he spring months of March and April are special to all Toy exhibitors and breeders as there are National Special-

successful people within the breed. We want you to be one of those whose valu- able input is available and hope when you are contacted you will find time to respond, helping to make better breed- ers and judges for your special breed. Top Notch Toys is a gorgeous, award- winning, all-Toy magazine that is the perfect place to shout about your suc- cess in the ring. Don’t get lost in the “other” magazines—be found in TNT . I’m here to help so call me with your wins and tell me about your promis- ing puppies! Check out our Facebook page… I’m dedicated to our totally ter- rific Toys! See you at shows and remem- ber, inquiring minds want to know. Bonnie bonnie@dmcg.com | 863.738.8848

shows and find adorable and fun shots in the ring or just loving life. We also have some talented amateur photog- raphers out there who send Toy Talk pictures like the one below from Marji McCormick that make readers of TNT smile just looking at the adorable pup- pies. Send me your photos for consider- Are you part of an internet breed list or Facebook? Let people know when your particular breed is featured so participation is increased. If you want the dog world to know about your par- ticular accomplishments and wins, you have to tell them about it! Advertising is one way to accomplish that; articles are another. When judges contact us for breeder information we refer to judges education committee members and ation in upcoming issues! Spread the Word

ties being held around the US. Then in May, many more Toy breed Nationals will take place. These clubs come up with clever themes and have many hard- working volunteers who spend count- less hours before, during and after the Nationals. We want to wish everyone the best of luck in the rings! Be sure to share your victories with us throughout the Nationals season. Featured Content Top Notch Toys features one or two Toy breeds in each issue. Not only do the features provide informative content to educate all judges—provisional, permit, new and long time—the breed features also provide potential for researching new breeds and just brushing up on all the ins and outs of our beloved Toys. Each National Club is contacted for members who are Board approved and capable of providing articles on history, judging and living with the breed. The majority of club are very responsive and excited to help, but some do not respond at all. Please encourage your National club to participate! We also ask for candid photos from Specialties and the Toy rings at all-breed

HEAD Hints by Anne K. CAtterson

T he salient points of the Brus- sels Griffon head need to be firmly imprinted in the mind of the judge, because therein lies the essence of the breed. Some of these very features are, or have been, in danger of extinction, which makes rewarding the correct type, and therefore ignoring some current trends, of utmost importance. Because the head can be a mystery for a new judge, especially a judge unfamiliar with brachycephalics, I have compiled some landmarks to look for. Starting at the top, the ears may be cropped or natural. In either case they should enhance the headpiece and not detract from general appearance. While there is a growing trend to refrain from cropping ears, there seems to be no complementary trend to breed correct natural ears—at least not in this coun- try. The natural ear should be small, with the tip reaching no farther than the outer corner of the eye, and break forward evenly at or just above the top skull. They should not resemble weath- er satellites in search of a signal. Natu- ral ears that are set on the corners of the head and break correctly forward do much to enhance the impression of head size and dome. The dome of the head is also a measure of type. It is prominently rounded in the forehead area with the frontal bones gently curving back to meet the superior orbit rims above a deep stop. The eyes are large, round, dark and face forward. The nose lays back, so that a dog standing in the rain might get a snout-full. The top edge of the nose should lie on a plane with the bottom rims of the eyes—or high- er. It is possible for the nose to be so

dramatically placed as to be higher than the top rim of the eye—which is infi- nitely more desirable than a nose placed too low. Looking at the head in profile, one should see a numeral 3 leaning backwards, or for those of us who still remember cursive writing, a capital ‘E’ leaning forward. This is easier to see on a rough-coated dog, but is a bit distorted in a smooth, where lack of beard will make the lower loop of that visual to be smaller than the upper arc. Upsweep of jaw is crucial. The prop- erly finished mouth is black-rimmed with a prominent lower lip sitting on

dramatic upsweep of jaw, the Griff face goes through some drastic changes. During that process it is common for the lower incisors to show between closed lips. Between the ages of 6 months to a year, this small glimpse of teeth is forgivable, provided it is only the lower incisors. The lower canine(s) should never hook over the upper lip. The breed is, or has been, losing some of these important head features. For several years eye size was dimin- ishing. This has been, to some extent, corrected by conscientious breeders. Judges play a large role in encouraging

“Upsweep of jAw IS CRUCIAL.”

a wide lower jaw. A lower jaw lacking 6 incisors is most likely too narrow. Digging into the mouth, however, is not encouraged. Everything you need to know about the mouth can be seen with a gentle lift of the lips. Never lift the upper lip straight up in the front, as it may block the nostrils and cause the dog to panic. Rather lift one side at a time, or feel with a thumb for the required undershot alignment. The line of the closed lips viewed straight on should be a wide, shallow curve and bring to mind the gentle arch found under a graceful Parisian bridge—not the sharp ones seen in front of McDon- alds. The line of the closed lips should also be scrutinized for symmetry. A lip set that appears to be off center may be your first indication of a wry mouth. Because puppies are not born with the

breeding trends, so please reward the large, dark eye and ignore the small or light colored eye when possible. The pout—that prominent lower lip that gives our Griffs that “just try and make me” look—has been slipping away of late. A “Grinch” mouth is undesirable. Regardless of coat color, eye rims and lips are black. The Brussels Griffon is considered to be a head breed. I have concentrated on the features of the head because it is the essence of the breed, and often the hardest concept for the new judge to “get”. I would not like this discussion to promote head-hunting to the exclu- sion of all else. The selection of a sound dog of type, is preferable to choosing a spectacularly dramatic headpiece that sits on a rectangular body lacking in bone.

BREEDER’S FORUM brussels griffon by Jacque Jones Treyacres Brussels Griffon W hat a surprise to be asked to write this article... I have been “out of dogs” for a 2. What dog that you have bred have you been most excited about and why?

I really am unable to answer this. But if I have to pick one I would probably say “Ch. Treyacres Zorro”. I cannot say he was definitely the best Griff I bred. I know that he sired many great champi- ons and was an asset to the breed. But the most exciting moment I can remem- ber was when he went BEST IN SHOW at 10 months of age... with yours truly at the end of the lead! The rest of his show career was with a handler and I just watched! 3. What are your thoughts on importing and exporting? Years ago we imported some nice Griffons from England and I feel that they added a lot to our breeding pro- gram. I have exported several to a good friend in Europe who is starting his own breeding program. If anyone who chooses to export, do your homework and make sure that you know where your dogs are going. 4. To date, what has been your high point as a breeder?

few years. Having had dogs for most of my life, it seems strange not to have a puppy beside me as I sit here at the computer. But there comes a time when it is time to quit. An option would have been to send a dog off with a handler, but that just wouldn’t work for me. We did that a few times and had some great wins but I didn’t have that special feeling of tak- ing a young dog in the ring and hoping that he enjoyed it as much as I did. Was his tail up? Hopefully it was, but if not he may be entered at several more small shows for experience and if he was not enjoying it by then, he stayed home, or in some cases, he went to pet home and spent the rest of his life living in luxury on someone’s lap. Of course, if he was of that special quality, we may use him for breed- ing... if we bred to a really great Griffon with showmanship that just wouldn’t quit. I chose to never double up on a fault... conformation nor showman- ship. Of course, it didn’t always turn out as I had planned, but when it did work. WHEEEE! When I decided to retire, I went the whole way and Treyacres prefix is retired also. This does not mean that I will never be a spectator at ringside. It is always great to meet old friends, tell stories of years ago and watch the ring full of pups as we pick out that Best In Show prospect. “I WOULD RATHER LOSE WITH A GOOD DOG THAN WIN WITH A POOR ONE.” 1. Tell us three conformation characteristics you consider criti- cal in your breeding program. Head, bone, topline. I must add “temperament”.

It has been awhile since I have bred a litter or shown a Griffon, so I have no answer to this question. 12. If you were not involved with showing dogs, what would you do? I would travel, be lazy and sleep until noon. About the Author

This goes back to question #2. But having said that, I must mention that Zorro’s dam, Ch. Treyacres Every Good Thing (call name, “Goody”) won her first group at 8 months of age. Again, I just held the lead and she won it on her own. 5. What is your pet peeve in the show/breeding world? Too many breeders are kennel blind. Also, I have taught Judges Education quite a bit and it is interesting to watch and seewhich ones have an eye for a dog, which ones studied the breed standard and understood it and applied it when judging... and there are always a few that don’t have the foggiest about any of it. 6. Is there a grooming secret you would like to share? Accent the positive and eliminate the negative! 7. Do you inbreed, linebreed or outcross and why? something not mentioned before...”Webbed feet”... some Griffons are born with webbed feet (toes that are joined together (not separated). This often goes with a “kinked” tail. This tail has a “kink” in it and hopefully the “kink” is near the end of the tail, so that it will be gone when the tail is docked. Do not be upset when you see a pup born with webbed foot and kinked tail as this goes with a beautiful head and good bone!! The pup in this photo is called MR. WeBB. Wonder why??

Dogs have always been a part of my life... many different breeds from Bull- dogs, Airedales, Irish Wolf Hounds, Akitas,

Black/Tan rough Male.

I did not do much “inbreeding”— but some line breeding. But when I did saw a griff that I liked and thought it had something that my bitch/dog could use. I did not hesitate to outcross. But if it had noticeable faults or it had pro- duced pups that had noticeable faults... I would run the other way. 8. Do you think your current standard is adequate? Yes. 9. Where do you house your dogs and whelp your bitches? This is not applicable now but I had indoor/outdoor runs as part of my home... large exercise area and whelping room. 10. At what age do you determine a puppy to be show quality? This depends... some pups develop early and are ready to go and others mature very late. Some of the earlier questions/answers cover this subject. Do not force a young pup to go around a crowded ring and expect him to enjoy it. But there are some that thrive on this... so if they enjoy it... go for it... Just make sure that they love doing it. 11. What is the greatest health concern for your breed today?

Poodles, Bull Terriers and more than I can remember. Some of these dogs were just house pets, some were shown at in breed but all were special. It is difficult to put the time frame that all of this took place but one day, Dayne, my daughter, wanted a small dog that she could love and hold. At that time she was about 6 years old. She had been training and showing her miniature poodle in obedi- ence and finished her C.D. in 4 straight shows... and in the ribbons 3 of those times. I had been asked to start an obe- dience class by the local Blennerhassett Kennel Club and these classes continued for many years. Later I became an AKC obedience judge for Novice, Open, Util- ity and Tracking. But during all of this time, Dayne would not give up on get- ting a small dog. We made contact with professional handlers, Jerry and Elaine Rigden and they had a small beautiful red rough Brussels Griffon that they had and they offered it to Dayne as a pet. Well, we were hooked on the breed. Our quest took us to Jim and Sally Wheeling (Hazeldean Brussels Griffons).

The BRUSSELS GRIFFON

by Lorene Vickers-smiTh

T he Brussels Griffon is meant to be a BLEND of the three main breeds of origin: the Pug, the English Toy Span- iel and a Stable-Ratter Affenpinscher type dog. Being a relatively new breed (approximately 200 years old) without careful attention, our genes tend to seg- regate back to the breeds of origin. We get the essence of Brussels Grif- fon TYPE as it was intended, only when we blend these types together proper- ly—and not veer off to any one direc- tion. Both breeders and judges alike need to pay careful attention to this. Either can set “trends” or “fads” eas- ily for our breed in as little as a decade or less. Our breed has many traits of being a little Terrier, but they are NOT little Ter- riers. These Terrier traits are meant to be blended and softened with the large round dark eye of the Pug and an almost identical skull shape of the English Toy Spaniel. They should not have a hard or fight- ing temperament. While the Brussels Griffon’s ancestry has a make up of “Stable Ratter”, just as evident should be their ancestry of ‘doing nothing but being coddled and sitting on the cush- ions of ancient Royal Families’. By choice, I accept only a cer- tain number of assignments per year. Because time will lapse between, I refresh my mind by reviewing each standard (and illustrated standard if I have it) the night before. If convenient, I view the breed videos. I tear articles from magazines that breed experts have written about judging their par- ticular breed and I have these filed in

A beautiful outline of correct type was ch. Treyacres Zorro winning here under Lorene in 1990. Presenting the trophy is ABGA President, edith nash hellerman.

the Illustrated Standards. Each time I judge—I want a clear picture of every breed’s IDEAL, firmly in my mind’s eye. I do not want to be misled by trends. When a breed is going through a trend and nearly all of the dogs in the ring have a certain look, certain size, or whatever—it is very easy to lose the

IDEAL in your mind if you don’t keep it fresh by studying. ABGA has an excellent Illustrated Standard. Between it and the AKC stan- dard, there are absolutely NO issues of the head that can be left to per- sonal preference. The AKC standard is also clear on balance and substance.

t5 01 / 05$) 5 0:4 . "3$)

“HEAD TYPE is whAT seTs our Breed APArT from oTher Breeds.”

The only issue in our standard subject to discussion, is tail length. Should you get a natural tail (or a kinked or tailless Griff) in your ring, please keep the tail in proper perspec- tive with the whole of the dog. While I agree that imported adults (or any pup- py with open eyes) should not be put through the pain of a dock just to qual- ify for a show, our AKC standard states “tail is docked”. A natural tail, however, is not listed as a disqualification or a fault. Therefore, our standard commit- tee and the ABGA board has agreed to leave the matter to the judge. Please do consider that overall quality of the exhibit and the structural set-on of the tail should be more important than how long it is, or if it even has one. In the same context as a complete tail, one must consider natural occur- rences of the occasional tailless, kinked or short tailed puppy that are found in most brachycephalic breeds. These anomalies are addressed in our ABGA Illustrated Standard: “Docking to about one-third is a guide to approximate tail length. Puppies can be born with tail kinks which may result in having to cut the tail on the short side. A kink at the base may prevent the tail from being carried high. Others may be born with short tails or tailless. There should be no penalty for this although the lack of enough tail does affect the overall balance of the dog.” It goes on” The feature of the so called “web foot”, like the kinked and short tails, can be traced to the cross with the English Toy Spaniel. Many of the most desired head characteristics are also features from this cross. Puppies born with web feet and kinked tails, which often seem to go together, tend to have excellent heads.” The judge is completely within his/ her right to award honors to a Griffon with a natural tail, kinked tail that can- not be carried up or a tailless Griffon, or to leave these exhibits unplaced. I believe the single most important characteristic to judging this breed (or any other breed), is the overall picture of balance and type, but I would like to stress head type especially. Head type

is what sets our breed apart from other breeds. Other characteristics are shared by many breeds, but our head type is unique to our breed (except for per- haps the English Toy Spaniel). Brussels Griffon head type borrows heavily from the ETS. To quote our ABGA Illustrated Standard: The position of the nose is important and a guidepost to judging the entire head. We also want a dog of substance, not elegance, heavy for its size in bone and rib. I don’t mean that the dog will look cloddy with extreme bone, but that it will be heavier than it looks for its small package and you will feel substance when you pick it up. Any AKC licensed judge should have a pretty good handle on move- ment. The new judge is still presumed to be an “old time dog person” with vast dog and structure knowledge. It is the ‘breed specifics’ that he/she would hope to gain by reading articles, attend- ing seminars and shows and studying with breed mentors. When the American Brussels Griffon Association puts on a Judges Education Seminar, depending on time, we often bypass these “givens”—and we spend our time on what sets us apart from oth- er breeds, our breed TYPE. Every pre- senter is instructed to begin with this statement: “The Brussels Griffon is a small, thick-set, compact , double track- ing Toy dog with “normal structure” and moderate angles that are balanced at both ends.” If you do not have a good handle on normal double tracking movement (this is not a ‘shuffle’ of a Bulldog, ‘roll’ of a Pug etc.—the Brussels Griffon has simple double tracking movement) then there are some excellent videos avail- able on the subject. I would suggest you start with “DOGSTEPS” A Study of Canine Structure and Movement by Rachel Page Elliott, or the AKC video series GAIT: Observing Dogs in Motion. Sit ringside and watch dogs move in groups. This is often where the ringside critic has the advantage over the judge who is only a few feet or yards away from the dogs that they are gaiting and their picture is narrowed.

That said, let’s go to what makes a Brussels Griffon “dripping in type”. Brussels Griffon correct head type is the hallmark of our breed. This head (Eng

& Am Ch Beauview Bonefide owned by Marjorie Simon) can not be improved upon. It’s perfec- tion should be set

in stone in every judge and breeder’s mind! He had the correct coat that could not grow profuse furnishings or beard. Look at the eye and nose pad SIZE and placement. See the breadth of nose pad, chin and muzzle—open nostrils. Notice the little bit of leather showing from the bottom lip, forming the pouty expres- sion. The small thin ears, tipped over and set on just right. AKC Standard Nose: Very black, extremely short, its tip being set back deeply between the eyes so as to form a lay-back. The nostrils large. This 3-month-old baby (see below) also displays the same hard coat, great head type and “pout”. From profile you can see the nose recessed in and tilting right into the domed forehead.

When we talk about jaw upsweep, it involves the entire bone structure of the head. The bottom mandible’s jaw bone (from jaw hinge to canines ) is actually curved—“swept up”. It will feel much like a Bulldog (on a smaller scale) with

She is licensed to judge the Toy Group, BIS and part of Non Sporting. She is Judges’ Edu- cation Chairman for the American Brussels Griffon Assoc. and she served on that committee for the Pug Dog Club of America for years. She is con- sidered a comparison specialist of brachycephalic breed head and skull types and has given many seminars on this subject. She Chairs the ABGA Illustrated Standard Committee. She is a past director of the Pug Dog Club of America and also served on their Ethics Committee and Chaired their Illustrated Standard Committee. She is past President of the National Brus- sels Griffon Club for over 10 years. She founded the Mid Michigan Pug Club in 1979. She has judged Brussels Griffon and Pug Specialties in this country, Australia and France. She was elected to judge the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialty in 1988 and again in 1997. She was elected to judge the American Brussels Griffon Associa- tion’s National Specialty three times. Both parent clubs have a 10 yr. void rule. Lorene is past President of Ing- ham County KC and is a member of both her breed clubs in England. When Lorene is not focused on Judges Educa- tion, her time is divided between Pub- lic Education and breed Rescue.

Brussels Griffons are EXTREMELY sensitive and intelligent. A soft hand, kind word and a scratch will help suspi- cion turn to love of the ring. Most intelligent dogs don’t immedi- ately jump into your face with kisses. Quoting our Illustrated Standard “some- what standoffish as they size you up” They size you up—then if you meet their approval—they might jump in your face with kisses. They should not cringe, slink or try to hide, but you must respect their need to check you out. These should not be HARD, little robots that have been conditioned to behave perfectly without thinking for them- selves. Please be especially gentle when examining them. As with any Toy dog that you want to examine closer, do not hang over the dog, ask the handler to either pick them up or place them back on the table. BE GENTLE. Ask the exhibitor to show you the bite. As with ANY brachy- cephalic breed, do not lift up both top lips at once as it will cut off breath- ing. (The ONLY time a QUICK view of this sort could be necessary is if THE EXHIBIT is EXCELLENT, you definitely plan to USE it and you feel the exhibi- tor is possibly concealing a wry or DQ mouth.) I personally do not like to stick thumbs or fingers in the dog’s mouth and pass germs. Width of jaw and muz- zle can be seen from the outside, usual- ly a side lip can be gently lifted to show the degree of the bite. (With skill and practice, more often than not, this can also be ascertained simply by looking at the construction of the skull, front and side and how the lips fall from the nose placement.) Brussels Griffons are very sensi- tive to mouth examination; please use good judgement. One last word, WHEN you get a cor- rect one, it may look very different from the rest of the dogs in your ring. You must study so you KNOW what is right and have the nerve to use it even if it is not “popular” at the time. Judges do have a lot of influence over the direction that the breeders veer; please use it to help our breed stay on the track our forefathers intended. About the Author Lorene has been “in dogs” all her life, attracted to brachycephalic breeds. Her parents and paternal grandpar-

a correct jaw. We can also have many of the same problems of the Bulldog and other brachycephalic breeds where lay-back is asked for; like Wry mouth or Shovel mouth (where the jaw lacks this curve and juts straight out). In Griffons, sometimes a dog with a questionable Shovel Mouth as a pup- py—will fold by the time it is an adult. I don’t mean for you to start feeling jaw bones in the ring. But DO visit as many breeders as you can. Familiarize yourself with the feel and look of differ- ent jaws and nose placements, correct and incorrect. Pretty soon you will be able to SEE it, without dissecting the dogs while you are judging them. One fad or trend that does not seem to go away is coloring and stylizing the coats (which can only be “stylized” because of incorrect coat texture). Please study our Illustrated Standard regarding coat and grooming so that you will not penalize a proper hard coated dog, with few furnishings (should you ever be lucky enough to have one in your ring). Profuse furnishings that are stylized and lengthy mean soft texture. Our breed is meant to be shown as natu- ral as possible, hand stripped only. In my days of showing, I learned how valuable this “hard as nails” correct Griffon coat was, when breed authority judge Dawn Vick Hansen rewarded Ch. Wisselwood Karefree Kate with a BOB from the classes. The essence of type also pertains to what is going on inside the head. A large part of learning a new breed is to famil- iarize yourself with the history of that breed and understand how this back- ground affects the temperament AND therefore the ring presence and how they accept YOU while being judged, or tabled.
