“I AM PRETTY LOW KEY AND EASY GOING. The Things i dislike are rudeness and baiT. Too many people consTanTly feed Their dogs in The ring. i ToTally deTesT baiT being ‘Thrown’ in The ring.”

Spaniels, Jim is Provisional/ Permit for Chinese Crested, English Toy Spaniels and Papillons and was referred to me by a Judges Educa- tion Chair. He is currently approved for Chihuahuas and working to complete the Toy Group. Jim is approved for the Sporting Group and some working breeds. He lives in Bixby, Oklahoma.

What is your original breed? My first breed was Cocker Spaniels. I also started showing and breeding Papillons in 2004. I also participated in Agil- ity and Obedience with both breeds and maybe even will do more and add Rally when I have more time after I slow down working, which I must continue to do in order to be able to afford my dog passions. What three conformation characteristics do you con- sider critical in judging/decisions? 1) Breed profile, 2) construction/soundness/movement, 3) specific breed characteristics that define “type” for each breed (essence of the breed). What Toys do you currently judge and are you antici- pating applying for additional Toys? Papillon, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested and English Toy Spaniels. I am just applying for regular status on the Sporting group and 12 breeds, so when that is approved I will work on the balance of the Toy group. What ring pattern do you prefer for Toy dogs? I use the same pattern for all breeds. Around the ring and down and back (sometimes on diagonal and sometimes across ring). Is your preference the table first or go around first? I almost always allow the dog to gait around to the table to get a first impression and to allow the dog to “warm up”. Is it your preference to have the handler show you the bite? I have always asked the handler to show the bite. Only if the handler is not capable or not doing it correctly will I do it myself. I also look at the bite LAST, not first, so as to avoid any undue stress on the dog until the exam is over. It seems

that if a dog or handler is not going to like part of the exam it is usually showing the bite that is a problem.

Can you name a dog from the past that is your ideal example? My two favorite Toy Dogs of all time (of course would be Papillons) and are the Phalene: CH Arkeno’s Ears To You, “Cobb” and the Papillon: CH Loteki Supernatural Being, “Kirby” so I guess that automatically makes John Oulton my favorite Toy Dog handler. What is your pet peeve when judging? Late to the ring, over handling, bait, etc. I am pretty low key and easy going. The things I dislike are rudeness and bait. Too many people constantly feed their dogs in the ring. I totally detest bait being “thrown” in the ring. If you were not judging dogs what would you be doing? Golf, Tennis, travel etc? In high school and college I competed in Tennis and Golf and also hunted with a GSP and Brittanys... I expect I would still be active in those were it not for breeding, showing and judging dogs.
