DISQUALIFICATION ISSUE by KATHLEEN B. KOLBERT, JUDGE Turyanne Yorkshire Terriers AKC Reg. THE YORKSHIRE TERRIER
I would like to thank Top Notch Toys for giving me the opportunity to write this article. I have been breed- ing Yorkshire Terriers since 1963. To date, I have had the pleasure of having numerous “Turyanne” York- shire Terriers amongst the Top Five each year. Additionally, I have been judging since 1979. I am now licensed for two Groups, so I am able to observe the current state of my chosen breed from both sides of the fence, as it were. I am fully aware that many of my fel- low judges, as well as fellow members of the fancy, are shaking their heads in bewilderment over the October 1, 2007 addition of the following dis- qualification to the Yorkshire Terrier Standard, which I now quote: “ Any solid color or combination of colors other than blue and tan as described
above. Any white markings other than a small white spot on the forechest that does not exceed one inch at its longest dimension. ” I refer you to the pictures included in this article. Obviously, the dogs in these photos do not have the dark steel blue body coat, nor the rich, shaded tan, as required by our AKC approved standard. The large amounts of white that appear in these animals make it obvious that their markings do not comply with any of the parameters established by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America for decades prior to the insertion of the disqualification noted above. In addition to our AKC-recognized parent club, The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, there are now three new groups that will affect the future of the Yorkshire Terrier.
The first of the groups is the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier National Club. This club is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the breed in accor- dance with the standards that were set forth by its founders, Mr. andMrs. Werner Biewer. The Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon, (pronounced Beeva) originated in Hunsruck, Germany in 1984. The Biewers started the breed through a recessive piebald gene occurrence in their Yorkshire Terriers. The master parents were Darling von Friedheck and Fru Fru von Friedheck. Both of these dogs were blue and tan, and were Yorkshire Terrier world youth winners in 1981 at Dortmund, Ger- many. In January of 1984, they pro- duced Schneeflocken von Friedheck. Schneeflocken was blue, tan, and white. However, the Biewers did not
