sired 11 champions, including Yor- kboro’s Ch. Mayfair-Barban Jamoca and Nina McIntyre’s (Chelsa-Nimar) Ch. Mayfair-Barban Poulet dam of four champions. Mayfair-Barban purchased Ch. Devanvale Jack in the Box from Lynn Devan (Devanvale) in 1973 with the purpose of bringing down size and improving color. A breeder familiar with Mayfair who wants to remain anonymous, told me that Mayfair-Bar- ban began to encounter some structural problems with this outcross. Jack sired seven champions. Jack’s son Mayfair-Barban Loup de Mer won eight BIS’s and sired five champion. “He was the first Mayfair-Barban Yorkshire Terrier born with that special quality that set him apart and made him a nat- ural in the show ring. He was the first break-through in bringing to the sur- face correct body coat color genes for his breeders,” said Anne Seranne. Loup de Mer’s son Ch. Danby Belzie- hill Oscar sired five champions. Oscar’s son, Ch. Mayfair-Barban Yummy sired five champions. Yummy’s full brother Ch. Mayfair-Barban Yahoo was a Group winner and sired eight champions. His son Ch. Mayfair-Barban Quinnat won five BIS’s and sired 11 champions. Yahoo’s son, Ch. Mayfair-Barban Verikoko won six BIS’s. My anony- mous source tells me that Quinnat and Verikoko were perhaps the best dogs that Mayfair-Barban ever bred. I was only quite familiar with Verikoko, at the time I was showing my second home bred Int. Am. Venezula, Pto. Rico Ch. Estugo’s Stargazer. Veriko- ko was a lovely dog with good color,

good topline but his rear was dubious. In case you might be wondering as to why Mayfair-Barban named its dogs after food; well, Anne was Gourmet Magazine’s editor for many years. She also wrote numerous cookbooks. Inci- dentally, The New York Times (Sunday) published a Roast Beef recipe by Anne Saeranne from 1962—it was comparing her recipe with one in 2011. Fred Wolpert (Wolpert), one of the most successful breeders in America and the first to breed to Mayfair-Bar- ban, told me “Barbara would get up at sunrise and take the show kids to the dog show where she would groom them impeccably and hand them over to Wendell Sammet, their professional handler. The puppies were raised at the Mayfair house where they were hand- fed from three weeks of age by Barbara and the staff. The puppies were lead trained by Peter d’Auria, their kennel manager and were sent off to “finishing school” with Wendell.
Mayfair-Barban was the result of a composition of Telestar, Progres- so, Belziehill, Yorkfold, Devanvale and Wildweir. Mayfair-Barban has owned or bred 73 champions, which includes six BIS winners, 21 Group, and three Specialty winners. Miss Seranne passed away in 1988 and Miss Wolferman in 1996. Joan Gordon and her twin sister Janet Bennett of Glenview, Illinois, initiated in 1950, the kennel that in America is synonymous with Yorkshire Terrier– Wildweir. The aim of Wildweir was to trace and duplicate the gene form from by-gone ancestors. Ancestors who had brought the Yorkshire Terrier into stylize purebred dog, capable of holding its characteristics. The lines are traced to Mrs. Green- wood’s Pelon line and Mr. Woods’ Arm- ley line. They have based their breed- ing on Mrs. Foster’s Ch. Ted and her Hudderfield Ben’s son, dogs that trace back to Ch. Bradford Ben, Ch. Ashton Duke, Halifax Ben, Humslted Ted and Royal Ted. These are dominant strains that produced the Clu-Mor, Lylhill, Har- ringay, Sohan, Invicia and Glendinian to name a few. These are the foundation of Wildweir, in other words, the essence of the breed. During their 60 years of breed- ing, Wildweir has acquired more than 50 Yorkies from England, Scotland and Ireland. Wildweir first imported Ch. Little Sir Model, who was the first of the breed to win BIS. He was sired by English Ch. Ben’s Blue Pride. The second import was Ch. Star Twilight of Clu-Mor and without a doubt the most influential in the Wildweir line. He was directly descended from Pelon
