FROM THE

I had planned an upbeat editorial about National specialties, dogs and dog shows, Toys in general and Toy people in par- ticular. However, with all the dissension and outright hatred running rampant in our society, I cannot find it in my soul to do so. I’m fighting hard not to fill my heart with hatred for the fac- tions on this earth who’ve declared war on the good people of this earth, but quite frankly it’s a battle I’ve not yet won. Yet if we, too, become blinded by hate, we join the ranks of the extremists we profess to disavow. In times like this we need a touchstone, a pillar to grasp to regain equilibrium. I turn, then, to the proclamation beloved by all true Americans, from child- hood on; it is my inspiration and my consolation: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NA- TION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

As a dog fancier, I live in a world surrounded by honest and dedicated—albeit very competitive—people who don’t hold many of the social and racial prejudices that we see in the mainstream press. I continue to be proud of our community which is wonderfully tolerant and inclusive. It’s hard to hate people when you love dogs. Here’s wishing everyone a won- derful holiday. I’ll see you at the shows and next month in Top Notch Toys.

CREATING AN AD YOU LOVE IN OUR National, All Toy gorgeous magazine TOY TALK ETCETERA by Bonnie Guggenheim, TNT Advertising Director & Associate Editor

T op Notch Toys has the most im- pressive and beautiful Toy dogs anywhere with ads that celebrate their awesome accomplishments. Our award winning design team with your assistance, will create a beautiful custom color designed ad only for you and offer you the opportunity to proof your ad andmake necessary changes. Making it easy to advertise is part of my goal so the following sugges- tions make it understandable for the design team to create an ad to your specifications. You may have a single page ad to “shout about” your success or perhaps a 2-page spread to truly give the readers and fanciers a visual experience with no distractions from an opposing ad. Once you have made the decision on which photo or photos you prefer, re- quest the photographer send us a digi- tal image or scan and email to me at 300 DPI. Most newer scanners will do this automatically. Email to me at: bonnie@aramediagrp.com and include text that would include your name, address, the dog information, and your ad ideas. For example, if you want specific colors to match the handlers clothes or a background to fit the registered name of the dog, or if you like only ads with no design, plain design or a lot of pictures and text, tell me in your initial email. I forward that information to the appropriate staff who will then start to work. It is important that you have photos that are sharp and clear but know that

we can move the dog or handler to fit the ad, include a judge or change col- ors for clothes. My recommendation is always to look through Top Notch Toys and see what ads you really like. We would not duplicate that ad but can see the style you prefer for your very special ad that represents not only your win but you personally as a breeder, owner or handler with a won- derful and winning dog. Once our design team has created your initial ad they will email a proof to you and to me for review which gives you the opportunity to make any changes you feel necessary which could include adding or removing a photo, increasing the font size or type, changing a background color. Many things that will make your ad stand out for you. The proof is emailed to you in low resolution so it may not appear as crisp as it will when in your full deluxe color ad in glossy print. Try and look at your proof on a laptop or desktop if pos-

process staff and designers will have looked at your ad to make sure it is an ad you love. Email the proofs depart- ment with your approval. Call me with your exciting wins, new puppies or thoughts for future articles. I’m excited for upcoming shows and hope to see many new Toy champions in ads you love. Contact me to reserve your page or pages at 512-971-3280. Inquiring minds want to know. Bonnie bonnie@aramediagrp.com 863.738.8848

sible as you can see it much better on these devices. Once you have decided on changes, please reply to proofs with all changes

on one return email. You are allowed up to three revisions, but we hope you can be concise on your first reply to allowus

to finalize your ad and forward it to the printing department. During this

by Tom Baldwin photos by Jordan Isom MAY 25-27, 2018 NOR'EAST TOY DOG CLUSTER N orth Kingstown, Rhode Island was the site of the 20th annual Nor’East Toy Dog Cluster on May 25-27, 2018. Classic Toy

Dog Club of Western Massachusetts and Town &Country Toy Dog Club of Eastern Massachusetts combined to present the only cluster in the country to offer four conformation shows, four obedience and rally trials and three agility trials for TOY DOGS ONLY. Total entries for the weekend exceed- ed 1400 in the three venues. There are two shows on Friday—one in the morning and one in the after- noon plus shows on Saturday and Sunday. There was an agility trial each of the three days. Daily parking is on blacktop next to the building with all RVs parked just a short dis- tance from the building. All RV and daily parking is next to grassy areas that were perfect for x-pens. The site has immaculate restrooms with plenty of hot water. Entire flooring in the building is sports turf with building-supplied tarps cover- ing all grooming areas. The facility provided a food vendor on site who had a varied menu of delicious lunch items. The clubs gave complimentary drink tickets (coffee, juice or soda) to all exhibitors every day. In addi- tion, there was a cooler filled with complimentary bottles of cold water available all weekend. Since it was Memorial Day week- end, the entire arena, Wide World of Indoor Sports, was decorated with American flags and red, white and blue tablecloths and streamers.

you could compete in more than one discipline and easily keep track of your rings. Toy Dog Agility exceeded 150 entries each day with exhibitors coming from as far away as Bermuda. The clubs offer NOHS at the two weekend shows. Puppy Groups and BBEGroups each are offered at two of the shows. Both clubs use a number of Permit judges (formerly Provisional) each day so many of the judges are new to the exhibitors. Four different dogs and breeds won the regular groups. On Friday morning, Thomas E. Dan- iels chose the Maltese, CH. Melitica

The Italian Greyhound Club of America, Bay Colony Pomeranian Club and Patriot Pug Dog Club con- sidered the classes at the Saturday show as their specialties. In addition, two clubs held independent special- ties on Saturday evening, the Hudson Valley Chihuahua Club and the Yan- kee Miniature Pinscher Club held their annual specialties that evening. There were supported entries at all four shows for Chihuahuas, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Ha- vanese, Miniature Pinschers, Papil- lons, Pomeranians and Pugs. All rings were in a climate controlled building on great turf footing. Rings were close enough to each other that

SUMMER OF 2018 WOOFSTOCK CLUSTER 4 Days of Peace, Music & Dogs! JUNE 7 - 10, 2018 by Richard Paquette, photos by Richard Paquette

A festive and fun atmosphere pre- vailed over the four days of the Yosemite Kennel Club and Con- tra Costa County Kennel Club’s All Breed Dog Shows held in Vallejo, California on June 7th-10th, 2018. The shows are known affectionately as theWoofstock Cluster! For anyone who has not had the pleasure of at- tending these shows, I highly recom- mend you add them to your ‘Bucket List’ of memorable events. All the participants, exhibitors and judges were encouraged to come dressed in casual, comfortable fun outfits and many did so for all the shows while Saturday was designat- ed the ‘must’ dress up day. The club members bought into the occasion by also sporting easily identifiable bright ‘tie dye’ shirts. It was fun to meet up with old friends Kimberley Meredith and Barry Cavanna who seemed to grant every wish of the judges. Never have I been to a dog show with so many brightly colored outfits and ac- companying ‘hippie’ like accessories from wigs, bandanas and jewellery which definitely resulted in a laid back feeling and party atmosphere. For those who forgot to bring out- fits, the club had a wide selection of Woofstock emblazoned t-shirts, hoodies, vests and other memorabilia available for sale. The awesome entry of almost 10,000 dogs over the week was adjudicated in a serious fashion but my personal feelings are that camaraderie and

sportsmanship abounded as a result of this peaceful ambience. Another feature was the music from the 70s playing throughout the whole venue during the judging. I must admit as a judge I had to concentrate occasion- ally on the judging as I had an uncon- trollable urge to break out in dance when some of the myriad of popular songs selected by ‘The Music Man’ Bob Birdwell aired. Bob also man- aged to play ‘personalized’ songs for each judge at the group and Best In Show level. I was quite surprised to hear a song about my breed the Shih Tzu as I judged. Where did he come up with that?! The weather gods shone on the event as each morning started with cool temperatures in the 50s and the high each day reaching to 75 degrees. Sunny skies prevailed and both dogs and people alike enjoyed the ideal weather conditions. The setup of the spacious Solano County Fairgrounds was utilized effectively with ample parking for RV’s and cars, plenty of space for the multitude of vendors

with all things doggie, great food vendors and last but not least, spa- cious outdoor rings under tenting and with manicured grass and two indoor venues for additional rings. Every- where were bright colored decora- tions keeping with the theme of days of the old Woodstock of Peace, Music and now... Dogs. One cannot express the apprecia- tion to the army of club members and volunteers who successfully staged this ‘Unique’ event. To mention only a few and my apologies to those not mentioned... sharing Chairperson du- ties over the weekend and putting out small fires before they were a prob- lem were the ever busy Phil Freilich and Deb Franklin. Hard working couple Ken and Eva Berg, who I met last year when I judged the Solano Kennel Club shows were busy co-co- ordinating the many Specialties and supported entries and Ken as Clus- ter Treasurer working hard to keep the books in the black. What makes this show a great event was the at- tention to detail, such as the amazing

hospitality including gourmet snacks and beverages—thank you all mem- bers, especially Danielle Green and Andrea Bridges. Nice to see the fa- miliar face of Shih Tzu buddy Dave Boone taking on journey man tasks to contribute. Respective club Presi- dent’sShannonFreemanandMireille Bischel should be proud of their mem- bers. Many extra events such as the Best In Specialties Competition on Saturday night with generous cash prizes for the winners and pizza and salad party afterwards contributed to the success of the event. There was also a Costume Contest for adults and juniors and a Pee Wee Competition orchestrated by none other than the extraordinary Johnny Shoemaker. In addition to all these activities, the clubs showed their leadership and dedication by facilitating an OFA Eye Certification, All Breed Cardiology and BAER Clinics. If you feel the fun has gone out of dog shows, you need to mark your calen- dars for June 2019 and attend the un- forgettableWoofstock Cluster!

COWBOY UP IN OKLAHOMA by Richard Paquette

T he American Shih Club National and Regional Specialty Shows as well as the Trinity Valley Shih Tzu Club Regional Specialty Show were held in Oklahoma City on May 25-29, 2018. Our host hotel the Sheraton Mid West City would also be the site for Obedience, Rally and Agility Trials. After four decades of attending the American Shih Tzu

doing 4-6 month Beginner Puppy and Dr. Clyde Shaw andMrs. Jacque- line Stacy doing the Regionals. Ms. Lynn Eggers was our Obedience and Rally judge. I am excited to report that this year was one of the ‘BEST’ Nationals I have attended. There was unbe- lievable atmosphere and camara- derie amongst all the participants.

ClubNationals I was especially proud and excited to be there as this year for the first time in the history of the breed a mother and daughter team would judge the National. Daugh- ter Jody Garcini Paquette would judge Sweepstakes and her mother Wendy Paquette would judge the National. The other Specialty judges were Breeder/Judge Dorothy Edge

At the American Shih Tzu Club Regional judge Jacqueline Stacy selected GCH CH Tian Mi’s Something To Talk About bred by Leslie LaFave and co-owned with Janis Clary Oehlschlager andDavid Barber as her breed winner. Highlights of the week were of course the dog shows but also some of the educational opportunities for partici- pants. An evening grooming and han- dling seminar was well attended and featured ‘topknot’ stations maned by Kathy Bilicich, Greg Larsen and Jen- nifer Miller with Adrian Agard shar- ing his handling expertise. Amazing Hospitality of the host clubs included an opening Meet and Greet and the next evening a Margarita Madness party which was very popular and resulted in everyone having a fun and festive time... probably due to an

over indulgence of libation by many. At every National we hold an Awards Banquet and Live Auction. This year the theme was ‘Cowboy Up’ andmany came dressed for the occasion. Dur- ing the dinner a running slideshow of dogs and people from the past en- tertained guests. The Awards rec- ognising our member’s accomplish- ments over the past year followed. This year’s winner of the Wenrick Sportsmanship Award voted on by the exhibitors and participants was Peter Ratchapol Chaykomhang. The festivities ended with a fun filled live auction to raise funds the American Shih Tzu Club Charitable Trust. Next year the National will be held in Florida during the week of April 22- 29, 2019 with the theme of ‘Flamingle’ with the hopes of continuing the atmo- sphere of festive fun and sportsman- ship that prevailed in Oklahoma.

A HAVANESE TOP NOTCH TOYS proudly presents

Rarely has a breed appeared on the scene and captured the imagination of the fancy quite so fast. Although thought to have been imported into its official home, Havana, Cuba, in the early sixteenth century, the Havanese didn’t hit the American show ring until 1996. Since then the record books have frequently seen winning members of the breed make their mark. Enjoy our special tribute to this very special breed. We here at TNT say muchas gracias y buena suerte to all Havanese lovers worldwide. EXTRAVAGANZA

TRACKING THE HEALTH OF HAVANESE— 20 YEARS LATER by Dr. Rafe H. Schindler & Sara Dellorto

T he Havanese breed was recog- nized by the AKC in 1996. Since that time the Havanese Club of America (HCA) has spon- sored major health surveys every eight years, the last being in 2012. We learned from these surveys that Havanese are a relatively healthy breed with very few life threatening issues, thus leading to the common belief that they were “long lived” as well. Last year, the HCA asked the Health Committee to research the question of how long Havanese actu- ally lived. The results turned out to be quite surprising. We began by distributing what came to be known as the “Longevity Sur- vey” at the 2017 HCA National Spe- cialty in Asheville, North Carolina. We asked only for the age and sex of dogs living in their homes that were at least seven years old, and at what age any of their other Havanese had passed away. We also specified that all Havanese being reported were AKC registered. The survey was next sent to all HCA members, then ex- panded to include members of local Havanese clubs; Havanese Yahoo groups; and anyone else we could

Havanese (making up about 20% of the total) who died around nine years of age—this is the motivation for our follow up survey, the “2018 Rainbow Bridge Survey.” You can find the full text of the 2017 Longevity Survey on the Health Com- mittee page of the Havanese Club of America website: https://havanese. org/health. The 2018 RainbowBridge Survey is an attempt to identify the most frequent causes of death as a function of age, sex, and lifestyle within the entire Havanese population. This informa- tion will not only help us learn more about our breed, but will also give us a much clearer direction for investment in future research. We hope you will take a few minutes to fill out and return the 2018 Rainbow Bridge Survey found on the HCA website https://havanese.org/ health at the bottom of the Health Surveys tab.

solicit information from. The survey was meant to be a snapshot of the Ha- vanese population; we collected data for only three months and in the end included 512 Havanese in the study. We didn’t ask people how or why the dogs died—just how old their dogs are now, and when others had passed away. We hoped we would have a large response to these simple questions, and we could answer the question of longevity in an unbiased fashion. And it might indirectly provide some guidance for future studies on how “healthy” Havanese really are. Now, you say, howold is old?How long should you expect your Havanese to live? (spoiler alert—we documented Havanese between 18 and 19 years old). When we averaged all the dogs together, it didn’t matter if the dog was a male or a female—the average age ended up just over 13 years. But the most fascinating observation was that if a Havanese lives beyond their 9th or 10th birthday, they are likely to live a lot longer—with an average age of over 15 years. Indeed, these are the dogs who live to be 16, 17, 18 or so years old. A second important obser- vation was that of a distinct group of

All informationprovided to theHealth Committee will be treated confiden- tially. No information identifying a survey responder or a dog’s name, registration or pedigree will ever be released publicly or privately. “WHEN WE AVERAGED ALL THE DOGS TOGETHER, it didn’t matter if the dog was a male or a female THE AVERAGE AGE ENDED UP JUST OVER 13 YEARS.”

THE HAVANESE

some have a tearing problem. I am talking about more than that. This is a lot of routine work. On the other hand, I have watched some overdo the grooming part, even using flat irons to take the curl out so it “flows” nicely. A correct natural coat will, on its own, do this. It is hard for a judge to know if the exhibitor has done this and you have to judge what you see. DAVID & DARLENE SCHEIRIS What is the biggest problem facing your breed today? Judge’s not utilizing the entire Ha- vanese standard as it is written. To many times judges are using a single word or parts of a sentence rather than taking in the whole sentence and paragraph to truly evaluate the Havanese. The word natural is the most misused and miss quoted in our standard. “Havanese should be shown as naturally as is consistent with good grooming.” “Havanese should be pre- sented at a natural speed on a loose lead to properly assess the character- istic springy gait.” No where in the standard does it state that the Havanese is to be shown anything but with “good groom- ing” The coat should be clean and well conditioned” Make placements in accordance to the standard is all a great breeder ask of great judges.

describes the “essence” of this de- lightful breed. In my opinion, the correct structure and resulting breed specific gait are lacking in many ex- hibits...they do not have one or all of the required top-line, short upper arm and moderate shoulder layback. BETTY PEPLIN Do you feel the average exhibit you see is properly conditioned and trained? I can tell you that from ringside most of the Havanese are ring trained quite well. I do like this as a judge, it can help to really be able to judge the dog and not have to bounce around to see them move. I know some pup- pies can not contain themselves, understandable, but I want to see them put the feet where they are sup- posed to be. Bouncing won’t work here. Table work, to properly go over the dog, feel the rise, structure etc... It helps if they stand still. Training classes take time but it is worth it. Conditioning of the flesh is hard to tell unless you put your hands on them. As far a grooming goes, some of them could be groomed a bit more some less. I know Havanese are supposed to be natural but some, have gone overboard in making them look “not” so nice. I personally like to see a Ha- vanese that has had a brush put to it, (no mats) and had some time put into it to be not so stained, I know

KATHY AMBLER What is the most difficult trait to protect in a breeding program ? I have talked to judges who judge the Havanese across the country and I hear over and over from them, that we are losing the short upper arm. That one element of the Havanese structure plays a huge part in our breed’s outline and spring of gait, hallmarks of the breed. In watching the breed in the ring, I am seeing more and more “generic” reach and drive. Why? Because the judges love dogs that can move out like a sporting dog. But unfortunate- ly, it is not correct for the Havanese. Running or moving too fast, ruins the Havanese spring of gait. That jaunty little bounce also goes along with their happy personality. The short upper arm also plays part in creating the rise to the rear in the top line...al- though it is supposed to be slight, I am seeing more and more dogs with arti- ficially created top lines, and unfortu- nately, they are still being rewarded in the ring. A Havanese without a correct top line, does not have the correct outline and this is an outline breed. JIM FEHRING What is your main concern for this breed overall, conformation-wise? The very first paragraph in the Havanese breed standard, to me,
