Stella finished in one weekend at 6 months old with multiple Best of Variety wins over 7 top ranked specials, and a Toy Group 3 to boot. At 10 months she added BISS in front of her name after winning the Houston Chihuahua Club specialty from an entry of 55. Now, while still under a year old, Stella wins BOS at the Nationals over an entry of 131 Long Coats. Many thanks to Judge Rodney Merry for this win. The stars are surely shining bright for our young girl!

We a against fairly formidable foes w One Hand H FROM THE EXECUTIVE ED Joseph Neil McGi In all my years—now, more than forty—I’ve never felt such urgency to fight for our rights. Or at least for our dogs’ and sport’s rights. We are up against fairly formidable foes who’d like to see our favorite pastime be- come a thing of the past. I’m speaking of course of the “animal rights” groups who really don’t have animals’ rights in mind. They have an agenda which they’re pushing, and pushing hard. They have the money and the man- power to shovel mountains of misin- formation in front of gullible, well-meaning souls who are brain- washed by the slick, sickening public- ity. Well, it’ll take a powerful weapon to combat them and we need to stop being complacent. Luckily we have the ideal ar- mament to fight the battle: we have us. I hereby present exhibits A through G but it’s just a start. Above I am pic- tured with three people who’ve given huge amounts of energy and effort into our world. This followed BIS at the Na- tional Dog Show (KC of Philadelphia), the televised coverage of which provides the fancy, and the world, with a wonderful display of sportsmanship, excellent dogflesh, and hopefully piques the inter- est of those who might join us. Steve San- sone, Debbie Scott and Wayne Ferguson, bright lights of the Club, are shining ex- amples of what individuals can do to bet- ter our world. More about them and the show later; I just wanted to extend my congratulations and thanks for another tremendous event. Events transpired in the last few months to test the mettle of the most op- timistic. R ging forest fires in North and South California forced many thousands from their homes, and pets, livestock and wildlife from those lovely hills were tossed out of safety zones and into dire straits. I’m proud to say that our fellow dog lovers have pitched in big time. Two of the many spearheading rescue efforts are Valerie Nunez-Atkinson (along with Westminster BIS “CJ”), in SoCal, and Nancy Martin up north. I hope to have more on these developments but for now I just want to say Thank You All for All You Do. As any of us know who’ve worked in rescue, especially following a natural disaster, once it’s out of the headlines people lose interest. Yet those needing assistance may need it for many months to come. We must keep up the work till the work’s no longer needed. Again, my heart goes out to all affected by this catastrophe, and my thanks to my fellow fanciers for another inspirational act. I’ll see you next month. Champ began the show year late in May with an amazing debut, winning the Judge’s Award of Merit at the ETSCA National Specialty in Kalamazoo, Michigan under breeder/judge Mr. Tom Kilcullen, and Best of Variety the following day at the ETSCA Designated Specialty under Mrs. Betsy Dale, followed by NOHS Best in Show at Holland [Michigan] Kennel Club under Ms. Shalisa Neely!

BIEWER TERRIER HISTORY by Gayle Pruett and Myrna Torres
T he Heritage of the Biewer Ter- rier has been an interesting and much discussed topic over the years. Mr. and Mrs. Biewer had been raising and showing Yorkies for over 20 years, when on the morn- ing of January 20th, 1984, while Mr. Biewer was at work, Mrs. Biewer as- sisted their little “Fru Fru” in pre- senting them with a blue, white and gold puppy. Mrs. Biewer was ecstatic and patiently waited for her husband’s work day to end so that he could share in her joy. They named this tiny beauty, Schneeflockchen von Fried- heck. As the only puppy in the litter, she quickly became the little princess of the house; with a destiny to world fame. Although this girl would never be used in the Friedheck breeding program, her birth marked the be- ginning of what is now known as the Biewer Terrier Breed. Mrs. Biewer fell in love with the col- oring of this puppy and along with her husband, decided to perfect the tri-colored Terrier. They poured their hearts and souls into the devel- opment of this new breed; spending many years in seclusion while per- fecting the look they had envisioned for this enchanting little dog. The Verband für das Hundewesen e. V. (VDH) had marked these dogs “not for Breeding”, which upset the Biew- ers, so they set out to find a registry that would fully accept their beloved, tri colored dogs. Along with their new look, came the new name of, “German Yorkshire Terrier”. During a visit one
day, their vet suggested they name the dog after Mrs. Biewer. They chuck- led as they contemplated the name, “Gertrud Biewer Yorkshire Terrier”. After much consideration, they found the “Biewer Yorkshire Terrier” to be a more fitting name; the “a la Pom Pon” was later added at the suggestion of Margot Eskens, the famous Ger- man singer. Shortly thereafter, they began registering the “Biewer York- shire Terrier a la Pom Pon” with the Internationaler Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde (ACH). The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier quickly became a hit in Germany and the de- mand for these exclusive dogs was
hard to meet, as the Biewers were very selective as to where their dogs went to live. Because of the demand, many breeders began to attempt to replicate the “Biewer dog” by mixing other breeds together. As things were beginning to fall into place for the recognition of the breed, Mr. Biewer became ill and was unable to help Mrs. Biewer carry on with the dream they had set out to accomplish for the Biewer Breed. Sadly, Mrs. Biewer de- cided to slowly phase out their breed- ing program in order to better care for her husband during his illness. For- tunately for dog fanciers, this was not to be the end of the Biewer Terrier.

The Biewer Terrier was introduced into mainstream America in 2003, at which time there were only a hand- ful of breeders. Being that the story, regarding the development of the Biewer, did not match the dogs com- ing from Germany, Myrna Torres and Gayle Pruett contacted Mars Veterinary in 2007 and began the process that would prove and estab- lish the Biewer Terrier as a purebred dog. This is the first time in the his- tory of dog breeding that a dog has been proven to be a “purebred” using the tools science has to offer. Through the collection of genetic data instead of sole pedigree documentation, the Biewer Terrier was established as a purebred dog. Mrs. Biewer became a member of the BTCA, Inc. in 2007, in order to assist the BTCA breeders with their breeding programs and to dispel any rumors associated with the breed.
She was excited about her position in the club and said she did not take it lightly. She was proud of what we were doing in America and hoped that everyone would work together for the betterment of the breed. Mrs. Biewer said, “I am happy that the standard has now been described. Please take note that you have a dog or breed that carries my last name; therefore, I take the right to determine to what guide- lines the Biewer is guided.” The Biewer Terrier has a lightheart- ed, whimsical, childlike attitude, making it a perfect companion for children and adults alike. The Biew- er Terrier is a loyal and fast friend to all he considers part of his fam- ily, including other pets in the home. Although every dog has his own unique and special personality, as a breed, the Biewer Terrier is confi- dent, happy, fun loving and even tem- pered. It is not uncommon to see your
Biewer Terrier prancing around the home with a toy in his mouth, as they show off their big catch. They are very entertaining and will keep you amused for hours. Generally speak- ing, Biewers are not noisy or especial- ly difficult in any particular way. The BTCA, Inc. has since been in- strumental in helping the Biewer Ter- rier receive recognition with the Ken- nel Union of SouthernAfrica (KUSA) in 2010, the Confederação Brasileira de Cinofilia (CBKC) Brazil in 2012, the Bahamas Kennel Club (BKC) in 2014, and the American Kennel Club (AKC/FSS) in 2014. The BTCA, Inc. continues assisting those countries working towards recognition for the Biewer Terrier as we all work together in developing a strong, healthy foun- dation for the breed. “T hat is the cutest dog I have ever seen”! Comments such as this are constantly heard byBiewer Terrier owners. Then, almost immediately, come the questions. How do you pronounce the name? Is it a Yorkie? Where did you get him? What breeds make up your dog? Or, just, “What kind of dog is it?” These are just some of the questions Biewer Terrier owners are constantly asked. With its friendly, self-confident atti- tude and striking coloring, the Biewer is truly a show stopper. TEMPERAMENT The Biewer Terrier is a newbreed that ismaking a big splash in the dogworld; its personality sets it apart from all other breeds. It was developed for nothing more than to be a fluffy little frou-frou companion dog, to amuse and bring joy and happiness to its owner. Never the less, being Terrier- like, many of its energetic qualities will keep you on your toes. As puppies they are aggressive chewers and love their toys. As adults it is not uncom- mon to find them running around with a toy, stick or whatever prize they have claimed, in their mouth. My intrepid little adult male, Bugsy, loves to bring me giant leaves, branches, flowers or whatever he can manage to work through the doggy door. He then proceeds to prance around showing off before he presents me with his gift! They enthusiastically enjoy going on

such as South Africa, Brazil and the Bahamas. Currently there is an effort to supply theUKKennel clubwith the information necessary for the pure- bred Biewer Terrier’s acceptance. In 2007, in order to maintain a reg- istry free from political complica- tions, the BTCA, Inc., opted to hire an established independent firm to maintain and issue all pedigrees and registrations for the Biewer Ter- rier. Meticulous records were kept on pedigrees and registrations along with DNA and genetic testing. Only those dogs that were proven to be pure Biewer Terriers were allowed to be registered with BTRA (Biewer Ter- rier Registry of America). Through our diligent efforts we were rewarded with acceptance into the AKC/FSS program in 2014. This was a great achievement since we had only begun applying in 2006. As of this January 2016, the Biewer Terrier has full rec- ognition with the UKC (United Ken- nel Club) and is able to show and earn points towards championships. Only BTRA registered dogs are allowed in both the AKC/FSS and UKC regis- tries. BTRA is open to all Biewer Ter- rier owners that are willing to geneti- cally test their dogs to prove purity of the breed. The Biewer Terrier Club of America is willing to work with anyone inter- ested in registering their dogs, re- gardless of club affiliation. The main interest of the BTCA is to further the development of this happy-go-lucky little dog that easily wins the hearts of everyone. They are definitely irre- sistible with their beautiful faces and hilarious antics.
as more information is coming to light, there will be clarification on the breeding program established by Mr. and Mrs. Biewer. The breed became popular in the United States in 2003. Originally called the Biewer York- shire Terrier by Mr. and Mrs. Biewer, the “a la Pom Pon” was later added by Margot Eskens, the famous German singer. The dog arrived on our shores with the name Biewer Yorkshire Ter- rier a la Pom Pon, now that’s quite a mouthful. Yorkshire was dropped from the name, after two years of ex- tensive genetic testing with an inter- nationally renowned company, that proved the breed was not a Yorkshire Terrier but a purebred with its own distinct genetic marker. Since “a la Pom Pon” was not a name originally used by Mr. and Mrs. Biewer, it also was dropped. The Biewer Terrier Club of America co-founded by myself and Gayle Pru- ett, received the blessings of Mrs. Biewer to continue on the path cho- sen by the club and its members in further developing and breeding for beautiful healthy dogs. Although the Biewer has very few health problems, Biewer Terrier breeders are working diligently to eradicate any issues that may arise in this breed. As with most breeds, there are other clubs that have formed, but none of them has done the extensive research or represents the purebred Biewer Terrier. As with anything else, each person must find their niche and where they feel their needs are best suited. The Biewer Terriers have found their way to both breeders and pet owners in countries where the dog is an accepted breed
long walks and naturally strut their stuff whether they are kept in the long flowing show coats or the easily man- aged puppy cut. Some owners have entered their dogs in agility competi- tions where the Terrier comes out full force. Biewers are also up to the chal- lenge of being secure enough to work as therapy dogs since they are habitu- ally very calm when being held. They will however demand attention and will pat you until you pick them up or you let them know that they are loved. CHARACTERISTICS The Biewer Terrier has a straight, soft silk coat that is neither curly or woolly. Considering they do not have an undercoat, shedding is virtually non-existent. The head should be tri- colored, white, black and gold/tan. The body should be white on the legs, stomach and chest/chin and tip of the tail. The back is level being either sol- id black/blue or stripped with white giving it a beautiful layered appear- ance. Other than a few brown hairs around the rectum, there should be no gold/tan anywhere on the body. The ears are small, V shaped, moderately wide set, erect on a slightly rounded head. The weight range is from 4 to 8 pounds. The personality is friendly, curious and outgoing—it should never be aggressive. HISTORY The history of the Biewer Terrier, pronounced Bee-ver, is still unfolding andwill hopefully, one day be fully re- vealed. As far as the legend goes, the first Biewer puppies, Schneeflockchen and Schneemann were born in 1984,

W e owe a debt of gratitude to Werner and Gertud Biewer for not throwing the baby out with the bath water. Although this breed started out as a complete surprise to the Biewers, they were intrigued with the coloring and de- cided to continue developing this little tri-colored beauty for the shear purpose of bringing joy and happiness to their owners. The Biewer Terriers loves to be loved and will return that love sevenfold; they will literally wrap their arms around your neck and hug you as long as you will let them. They enjoy entertaining you with their peculiar little antics and games developed with the sole purpose of keeping your undivided attention on them. It is not uncommon to see the Biewer Terrier smiling back at you, as they demonstrate just how much they truly love you and are happy to be in your company. The Biewer Terrier being a new breed requires particular attention to the features that make the Biewer Terrier so exceptional and extraordinary. It goes without saying that health is al- ways our number one concern when breeding. We are striving to eradicate any issues that may pop up during the course of establishing our breed. puppies, but it takes a special person to breed correctly. The Biewer Terrier breed has been especially harrowing due to the dif- ferent theories behind the beginning of the breed. For this reason, the breeders that chose the correct path to breed and develop this magnificent dog deserve recognition and gratitude for their loyalty and faithfulness.Mrs. Biewer’s steadfast friendship and
Biewer Terrier set it apart from any other. No amount of training can turn a poorly bred, dull Biewer Terrier into a robust, whimiscal, loving Biewer Terrier. Breeding any breed of dog is a huge undertaking and responsibil- ity. A person owes the public the best possible specimen they can produce in health, temperament, structure and in all aspects, to be as sound as possible. Anybody can produce

Biewer Terrier and other outside ven- ues that host breed education booths. We take every opportunity to educate the public about the Biewer Terrier and wonderful qualities that makes the Biewer so special. Adding to the many details that make the Biewer Terrier so unique is the fact that it is the first breed in the his- tory of professional dog breeding and showing, that was proven to be a pure- bred due to an extensive genetic study. Customarily, there is a strict docu- mentation of all pedigrees and breed- ings when developing a new breed. Immaculate record keeping is of the utmost importance. It was accepted into the FSS; Foudation Stock Ser- vice of AKC; American Kennel Club just eight years after first applying for recognition. This was an important step in furthering the development of the purebred Biewer Terrier. The AKC is a wealth of information and is anxious to help new breeds develop properly using all tools available. As the Biewer Terrier continues to warm the hearts of everyone they come in contact with, you can expect to see this breed among the most de- sired breed on Earth.
dogs has always been to use the Mars genetic test for establishing whether a dog is a purebred or not. We also re- quire a coat color analysis to ensure the dog meets the coloring set forth in the AKC and BTRA accepted stan- dard for the Biewer Terrier. We are finding that the Biewer Terrier carries a recessive gene for the choco- late/liver coloring. With this new- found information we have made the provision for registration purposes only to include the dogs carrying the “b” gene. Dogs displaying the choco- late/liver coloring are considered a disqualification from the show ring in hopes of discouraging the breed- ing of off colors. The board has always considered what is best for the breed and we feel we have to acknowledge all things concerning the Biewer Ter- rier. We are looking at all aspects fo the Biewer breed in order to avoid any issues five or ten years down the line. The BTCA; The Biewer Terrier Club of America, Inc. continues to assist those countries interested in gaining recognition for the Biewer Terrier with their respective Kennel Clubs. We are contributing to the “Meet the Breeds” events within the AKC arena to heighten public awareness of the
understanding through the tribula- tions of introducing the Biewer Terri- er to the general public had proven to be invaluable. We are thankful to the Biewer Terrier breeders throughout the world that are taking this respon- sibility seriously so that the general public will be able to enjoy the qual- itites of the Biewer for a lifetime. Due to the many talents of the Biewer Terrier, you will see them in the show ring taking top honors in conforma- tion with Best in Groups and Best in Shows. Their versatility is giving them the same recognition in agility events. Many have found their way into the modeling business, show- ing off their beauty on the runway for some of the best clothes design- ers in the dog industry and many of the top dog magazines are using them to promote products widely used by all animals. Due to the acceptance of the breed by AKC/FSS in 2014, the popular- ity of the Biewer Terrier has steadily increased throughout the world with both pet owners and breeders alike. With popularity growing so has the desire for people to obtain AKC regis- trations on their dogs. Our procedure for accepting non BTRA registered

AMATEUR EXHIBITORS HOPE FOR THE ‘BEST’ by Dan Sayers
I t used to be said that dog shows are the only sport where amateurs compete head-to-head with the pro- fessionals. Though this statement is still true, today’s amateur owner- handlers can also enter their dogs in contests that exclude participation by paid professionals. Since 2012, the AKC National Owner-Handled Se- ries (NOHS) has provided bonafide owner-handlers—a designation that’s strictly defined—the opportunity to compete for Group and Best in Show wins without going head-to-head with seasoned pros. The series has increased entries at most show-giving clubs where the competition has been offered and bolstered support for a sport that depends on individual en- tries to sustain itself. However, some critics have suggested the program’s success has created a two-tier system that rewards owner-handled dogs as second-class citizens. Time will tell whether the series proves to be a time-tested tradition or a short-term solution. In the meantime, owner- handled dogs have given their han- dlers every reason to feel optimistic. IT’S OWNER-HANDLED, NOT OWNER-HANDLER The NOHS is a competitive forum that allows dogs that are owner-han- dled to compete only against other dogs that are owner-handled. The series is intended to celebrate the caliber of the canine, not the merits of its owner-handler. Although the

Partici- pants must be mindful not to jeopar- dize their amateur status by receiving payment for services rendered in the ring. “Any type of remuneration as- sociated with the service of handling a dog in the conformation ring meets the definition of a professional han- dler in regards to eligibility for the AKC National Owner-Handled Se- ries,” according to the AKC. “Com- pensation for expenses outside of the conformation ring does not meet this definition.” Owner-handlers who show dogs for family and friends should be compensated for their ef- forts only through gifts of a lunch or dinner and a full tank of gas. ENTRY IS BY ELIGIBILITY Any exhibitor may compete in the NOHS provided he or she is not a professional handler or a member of a professional handler’s household. As characterized by the AKC, “Pro- fessional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers’ organiza- tion, distributed rate cards, or oth- erwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years.” Assistants may compete with their dog in the NOHS provided they are a genuine Junior Handler as well. As recorded in the April 9-10, 2018 AKC Board Minutes, “Current assistants that are eligible to compete in Junior
distinction may seem obvious, some participants have gotten into the habit of referring to the series as an “owner- handler” competition. This is not the case. Unlike Junior Showmanship, the NOHS does not instruct judges to evaluate the competency of the handler. Instead, they are to consider how closely each dog conforms with its breed standard, just as they do in the regular classes and for Best of Breed. As stated on the AKC website, “The determination of the awards in the AKC National Owner-Handled Series is based solely on the quality of the entry. The owner-handler’s han- dling ability is not of consideration.” According to the AKC, more than 80 percent of American show dogs are taken into the ring by their owner- handlers. This figure represents a lot of competitive people. “The purpose of the AKCNational Owner-Handled Series is to recognize and showcase the quality dogs being exhibited by owner-handlers and to provide a ven- ue for the owner-handlers to compete against their peers,” instructs the AKC. Participation in the program has helped to maintain (or increase) entries at those shows where the se- ries has been offered. The offer of additional trophies and rosettes has proven irresistible to many owner- handlers around the country. Although it’s the dogs that are re- warded and not the exhibitors, it’s important for owner-handlers to maintain their amateur status while

show calendar. Birthdays, anniversa- ries and weddings can be missed. Va- cation time can be spent alone in mo- tel rooms on the outskirts of nowhere. In the pursuit of their dreams, many owner-handlers regularly make the kinds of difficult decisions that can have a negative impact on other areas of their lives. Having an understand- ing spouse or partner—and children— can help to ease the burden. Like their professionally presented counterparts, owner-handled dogs must be kept in competition-ready condition. The regimen required de- pends largely on the breed, but every dog demands attention. Maintaining optimal health and providing physical and mental conditioning for the ring can be as demanding as training for a half marathon. Drop-coated breeds come with their own conditions for success as do breeds that require continual scissoring. Many breeds require roadwork and a place to safely run free each day. Too much time spent on the road can be damaging to muscles and harmful to the spirit. It’s important for owner-handlers to be mindful of balancing the demands of competition with the ability to take the road less traveled on occasion. A NOHS Best in Show rosette is not earned simply through dedication and hard work. It comes with the sat- isfaction of knowing the owner-han- dled dog has been rewarded together with its very own person. The enthusiastic embrace with which the AKC National Owner-Handled Series has been embraced by the fancy emphasizes the important role owner-handlers play in helping to preserve a sport that is, in turn, pre- serving purebred dogs. Since many owner-handlers are also dog breed- ers, their recognition cannot be over- stated at a time when the purebred dog’s value in society is being chal- lenged. Today’s owner-handled dogs represent the eternal bond that has been shared by our two species for millennia. This bond cannot be bro- ken, which should give every owner- handler a reason to feel optimistic.
Showmanship (meet age and amateur status requirements) may compete in NOHS.” Any dog that is co-owned by a professional handler or a member of his or her household is also eligible to compete in the series, provided the professional handler or household member doesn’t handle the dog dur- ing the breed level competition for that point show. Dogs that are eligible to compete in the NOHS must be entered accord- ingly for each show where the series is offered. These events are identi- fied on the club’s premium list club’s where an eligibility “check box” ap- pears beneath the signature line on the entry form. No additional fee is required. All eligible dogs must be handled by eligible owner-handlers throughout Breed, Group and Best in Show competition. The NOHS com- petition occurs immediately follow- ing Best of Breed judging. According to AKC regulations, “All dogs in the BOB competition (including WD & WB) will stay in the ring after the judge makes their placements in BOB competition. The ring steward will ask all professional handlers, house- hold members and current assistants to professional handlers to leave the ring and then the judge will select Best Owner-Handled (BOH).”
Each BOH dog is eligible to compete in its respective NOHS Group. Judg- ing of these Groups may take place 30 minutes before regular Group judging and in a separate ring. For maximum recognition, the AKC advises clubs to “schedule the NOHS Best in Show just prior to the Best in Show judging for the regular show.” This exposure has inspired many owner-handlers to renew their dedication to both their dog and to the sport. This commit- ment is recognized through a scale of points that rewards NOHS Group placements and Best in Show wins. Each BOH Breed win earns 5 pts. (BOB at a National Specialty earns 10 pts.) Groups One through Four re- ceive 30, 20, 15 and 10 points respec- tively and RBIS receives 75 pts. For an all-breed NOHS BIS, 100 pts. are earned. Since points are accumulated at each show, the top NOHS dog re- ceives 135 points for a day’s work. DEDICATION HAS ITS REWARDS The contribution owner-handlers make to the sport of dogs is acknowl- edged each year as part of the AKC National Championship, held in Or- lando, Florida. This year, the NOHS Finals begins on Friday, December 14th with Breed and Group compe- tition, and wraps-up the following evening with the awarding of NOHS Best in Show. Dogs that have finished the year (from October 12, 2017 to October 10, 2018) ranked in the top ten (including ties) for their breed received an invitation to compete. This invitational tournament all but guarantees the highest level of com- petition available to the sport’s most dedicated owner-handlers of every recognized breed. Accumulating the qualifying number of points necessary to make it to the finals in Orlando doesn’t come with- out costs. Pride of ownership requires serious dedication, sacrifice and re- serves of energy on the part of own- er-handlers and their families. The risks can be as great as the rewards. Personal commitments are often postponed due to conflicts with the
